Anyone found a good method to remove the vent window handle and the chrome post that secures the window closed ? They are very corroded and would like to re chrome them but have no clue how to remove them safely. Any advice ? Best James
The vent handle has a pin that you tap out with a very small punch. It wiggles off kind of hard sometimes and there is a wavy tension washer that keep it from rattling. You take out the screws that are in the top of the door and the ones in the door about at the same level as the bottom of the vent window (usually clutch head screws) and then the real fun begins. Take the access panel on the inside of the door off and reach up as far as your arm will let you toward the bottom of the vent window bar (real name "divider bar") and you will feel the head of a bolt that takes a 1/2" socket. Soak this bolt with some Kroil for a day or so and then with a socket, extension, ratchet, mirror, and flashlight screw the sucker out. With the window rolled down the divider bar will tilt and come out but you will need a bit of profanity to get the screw bracket through the window slot. If you come up with an extension or combination of extensions that positions the ratchet handle in the access hole it goes a lot easier.
Good suggestion. Thanks.. Did you ever take off the the chrome post that the window handle would secure to when you close the vent window? Curious how one has removed this post , but I am guessing I have to grind down the two rivets, but hoping to avoid.. James
