Hello I would like to know if anyone can help me decode my vin # for my 1952 Chevrolet. The only #'s/letters I could find on the cab are BKCA 24620. Thanks any help would be appreciated.
Welcome to the fun house. That number looks like an engine serial number. The serial number for your truck should start with 1 or 2 numbers, followed by 3 letters, and finally a set of 4 to 5 numbers. If your truck is a 1/2 ton, the first 2 letters should be KP. If it's a 3/4 ton, the letters would be KR. There should be a plate attached to the driver's side "A" pilar that has the number stamped on it. Again, welcome aboard and have fun!
vin # the plate located on the a-pillar is there, but they guy i purchased the truck from had already had it sandblasted, therefore there are no visible numbers on the plate. are there any other identifying #'s. thanks
This might be a silly question but, do you have your title? The title number is the same as the VIN number. Gater
You might try removing the plate and see if you can read it from behind the plate. Those plates are thin and a lot of time you can make out the "stamping" from behind.
Title & VIN Actually that's rarely the case as when these old trucks were new , the engine was thought to be the most valuable part of it and so they used the engine's serial number most of the time to title the vehicle . -Nate
I do not have a title, just bill of sale. The guy never mailed me the title. I will try removing the plate to see if there are any numbers. thanks for your comments
Nate, I'll bet they wouldn't have done that if they could have foreseen how many times the engines would be changed out. I have never seen one around here that used the engine block number for the VIN. 'Course I am from the south and we do things different down here. Heck, in Georgia, after a car gets to a certain age they just disregard the title. Gater
Gator - Out here in the West, when I moved my vehicles up from California to Washington, the State Patrol crawled under the hood and under on a creeper looking for serial numbers before they would register in WA. It's probably a hold over from cattle rustling days . . .
Just So ! That was entirely the point ~ back in the day it was a routine thing to have the title corrected after the engine was swapped out.... Many states still don't issue titles on older vehicles , a real PIA if you buy one with out of state title and re-register it in your state and they take the old out of state title but don't issue you a new one , now you have a vehicle registered to you that's hard to re-sell....
