Anyone have a creative solution to the poor sealing around the side windows on the 60s trucks? I have replaced the felts and still get water in my doors if I don't use a tarp when it rains. Am I alone in having this problem? Yes, I know about the drain holes in the door bottoms... but wouldn't it be better to keep door insides dry?
I not sure you can completely seal windows from rain water and still be able to roll them down. Make sure you have good rubber and good felt strips. Most importantly vaccum out the inside of the door and make sure the drain holes are clear. Zinc paint will slow any rust inside the doors.
Drabo: Windows go up and down in my Dodge Durango with no water penetration... why not my C-10? I take it from your response that you have this problem too. I'm throwing this topic out to see if anyone has really tackled the problem of improved seals/sealing. The problem seems to be twofold: 1. vent wings- rubber slips off outside of door and falls down into the door channel, letting rain in and 2. felt is a bad design and just leaks around the main side windows.
Billy, The window felt was never designed to keep rain out, just debris, that's what the weep holes in the bottom of the doors, ( and other areas ), ar there for. Newer vehicles use tight fitting rubber seals in the window openings that redirect water away because they are formed at an angle. You might do a bone-yard run to look for a door with roughly the same lower opening length, and see if you can get them to fit. If successful you could order new ones and see if they actually work. As you observerd, the wing window would probably always allow some moisture in. Most folks just make it a annual habit of clearing the weep holes and taking a shop vac to the inner doors. Val
Val, Was just hoping someone else had explored this... perhaps some bodyshop guy who fixes doors all day might have had an AH HA experience? Or someone may think of something. No luck I guess... I HATE water in my doors and will solve this someday. Just 47 projects in line ahead of it. D
