Has any one ever welded a front half of an s 10 frame to the stock 47-54 chevy/gmc frame because i was wondering if that would be easier to change my 8 lug to 5 lug and then just put in a newer rear end and still use a v8
If you want easy, just put a m2 like a fatman under it. The money you spend is well worth it, the geometry is done for you, the track width is right, you don't hack up your frame, it can be installed in a weekend, many options are available, etc. I have installed 2, an air ride and a coilover, both were simple to install. The coilover or the shockwave set up are the easiest, I like the way the brackets set up. Then just get a rear, I use an 8.8 out of a town car, ltd, crown vic. Great gear ratios, drum or disc, and with a stock rim, fills out the fenders perfectly. Decode the tag on the pupkin by looking at the second line of #s. It will say something like 3 08 8.8....the first is the gear ratio. If there is an "L" in the ratio, it is limited slip. Just grind off the stock mounts, weld on saddle brackets, and bolt it up. Just my 2 cents....
1/2 ton front axle The axles are the same, only one has 8 lug hubs and the other has 6. I'm swapping mine out. This also gives you the option of a disc brake conversion to 5 lug, if you want. I'm staying with 3/4 leaf springs, just getting the lowered kind from Eaton Springs. Plently of new stuff to upgrade the steering as well. My front axle is from a 54 Chevy 1/2 ton. It's going under my 3/4 G. I put the pitman arm from the 54 on my steering box, that way I can replace all everything from there on. (I like the 54's drag link better anyway.) Just an idea. I'm in the same boat.
