"Well it just goes to show you, it's always something, you either got a toenail in your hamburger or a cracked coil." ( my apologies to Roseanne Rosanadana ) Ken came by today to help me mount the new fuel pump and plumb the lines for the vacuum pump on this new pump. We did a really pretty job, with only one screw up (bent the tubing the wrong direction) that was very recoverable without another trip to FLAPS. Had to remove the coil to run the vacuum lines behind it, and just as I was putting in back on we saw this .... Strange thing is, the truck seems to run OK. Besides the + and - markings on the terminals, the only other marking was "made in China" on the bottom. I guess it is time for one of those "Russ recommended" NAPA IC64 coils.
This just proves that there is at least 1 Chinese repop that is worthy of going on a gmc! I've seen cracks in coils before a lot less worse than this that have rendered a vehicle inoperable, but that 1 takes the cake! Zig and Wolf, I guess you guys are right about how manly them long motors are! Ken
I have had coils boil over and crack, you pick them up and feel the oil bubbling. That one is toast, I do believe.
Pretty much, but I'm still at a loss about the Carter YF carb. The idle mixture adjust screw just doesn't do much. It was about 2.5 turns from the seat when I got the truck. I can turn it in until it is about 1 turn from the seat with no change in idle (450 RPM) quality. Closing it up any more leans out the idle and it stalls. Taking it back the other direction the idle smooths back out and stays good all the way until the screw falls out at about 6 turns causing the engine to stall. I pulled the carb because of the gunky old brown gas, disassembled it and blew out all the passages. Put it back together and it operates the same. I'm planning to get a kit for the carb. I'd rather not pay $100 for a 5 gallon bucket of Berryman's Chem-Dip, which probably isn't near the formula that it was when we bought it back in the early 60s. Do any of you have good experience with a smaller size carb cleaner?
I have the one gallon can size and so far it does the work needed. I have used it mostly for my 9&8 N carbs. Charles
Glad you found that! Gotta love that 228... At least I do mine I have one gallon can of that carb dip. I used it for my zenith carb for my truck, worked just fine.
Wolf, Which Zenith do you have on your inline-6? I have some Zenith and Stromberg carburetors sitting around my garage from old fire trucks... I thought about cleaning one of those up just to get my engine running. Damon
Hmm... I don't recall. nate beware that some long motors will be popping up... I have a document I can email to ya. bwolfy_53@hotmail.com Mine looks similar but to the model 228 as they call it on page 2. Here are some pics of mine. Maybe that will help ya out. I got a zenith rebuild kit from our host. http://www.classicparts.com/1947-59-Carburetor-Rebuild-Kit-Zenith/productinfo/81-154/#.UW7PpErEXEY Not sure if that helps ya or not...
