I had a guy tell me that he bought a 62 chev halfton pickup he said it has a stock straight six in it and will be selling it with the tranny could any body tell what size motor they would have put in this from the factory and would the trany fit in my truck I have a 235 in it now with a 3 speed on the floor and thought it might be a good invesment for later and what about the rearend.thanks for your input.
Put me in coach, I'm ready to play! The standard 6 banger for '62 was the ol' reliable 235. They also offered the 261. In '63, they discontinued the 235 replacing it with the 230 6 cylinder as the standard engine and 250 6 cylinder engine as an option.
As Ken said . Ron ; you'd better have him send you a pic just to be sure . Top dollar for the 235 engine , fan to clutch is $150.00 . he might ask for more but wait a year or two and it'll still be sitting under a tarp in his garage
Tarp in the garage And that's EXACTLY how I got my engine. Great guy on this site pulled his 235 to put a V8 in. Tried to sell it, but it languished in his garage for several years whilst he was tearing down and building his truck. Nicest guy in the world and he GAVE it to me, fan to tailshaft. I just got back home after tooling around in the truck for over an hour and it runs just perfectly. Andy
tranny so in saying all that it sounds like what ever stock engine is in the 62 the tranny should bolt right in to my 235
Correct . There's very good interchangability . You might want to break down both clutches as they offered three different diameters IIRC , of course you'll be wanting to use the largest one....
I have a soft spot for the 62 235's. In cars power steering and a/c were starting to appear often and of course these can be transferred over to the early trucks.
Don't Forget : ALL 1962 Chevy's came with a fabulous new Delcotron alternator ! so if you find a takeout '62 235 , it has an alternator bracket on it allready ! 1962 was the ONLY year 235's came with alternators......
