Gear Oil But never , _EVER_ use grease ! . If you have access to STP or Bardahl typ of super thick lubricants , use them as they'll drip less and yes , your steerng gear is going to drip a LOT 600W oil is good too , the idea is to have an oil that flows no matter how slowly . Fill the steering box right up to the filler hole's threads . The very best seal for the sector shaft (the horizontal one that drips) is made & sold by GM dealers , it's for a 1970 C-10 pickup with _manual_ steering , I posted the part number some time ago , it's a $10.00 seal and well worth the $ . DO NOT take the old seal out until you have the new one in your hand ! . No need to dismount the steering box either . Use a bit of pipe or a deep socket to bang the new seal in . Read my older posts about centering the steering box and follow them to a 'T' .
kind of oil Hi Wolfgang, i took for all - rear axle, tranny and steering box - a rear axle oil from MAN truck dealer. It looks like honey and flows very slow. turn the bottle, put it on top of the tranny and go to drink coffee. After an hour the bottle is empty. Volker
Gear Oil Ask for the tranny oil for an old air cooled Kafer or the differential oil for a Mercedes W-123(yes , I own & love those too , Diesels of course) Remember : never , EVER overfill the tranny or differential ! doing so causes not only leaks but serious other troubles you don't want to experiance .
