SHMBO and I were talking tonight and the subject of lightning bugs or fireflies came up. I've been in the Houston, Tx area for 30 years now and I don't think that I have ever seen a lightning bug here. I remember my grandfather punching holes in the top of a Mason jar in the late '50's to early '60's so that I could catch them in Tennessee.

What a treat it was back then to haul butt and grab one in your hand so that you could put it in a jar. Then when you got a bunch of them in there, you'd shake the jar just to watch the light show!

Am I on dope right now or was that fun??

Get away from the big city

    Ken,

too much grass mowing and lawn watering in the urban sprawl north of the big H. you need to get out where the hay hasn't been cut lately there are still ample lightnin bugs in Texas. Lawn manicures, concrete and mosquito control doesn't grow many bugs. Roaches and fire ants maybe.:D

maybe you were talkin about Tire Flies, seen a bunch of those silly things around a couple of years back.:D
    my 2 cents

    Did you catch that?

Jim doesn't adjust his price for inflation!:D

My daughter has spent a few nights out collecting fireflies. They were t-h-i-c-k last month. Not so much, now. Or, they're still thick, but we got so sick of giving blood to mosquitoes that there could be a brazillion fireflies out there, but we'll never know!
The picture's there though. In my mind. The look on my daughter's face as she holds that jar up to her eyes to look at the light show. Or just the sound of her squeals as she nabs (without killing) yet another firefly.

God made fireflies for kids, and people who still remember "joy".

    not "Joy"~ BIG difference!:D

    Yep ;

I sure was fun collecting them in big old Mason jars ! :D

One kid I knew , Danny , used a bit of plastic to wrap a bunch of them up and then tried to read by thier light......

Yes he was a confuddled young man, told us he was God and a few years later he chopped both his parents up with an axe :(

I rarely see fireflies here in Sunny So. Cal. th ugh .

Try looking at the park behind the library on Cypresswood, just a few miles from your house. After you go through the gate nearest the County building park in the lot at the first turn you come to.

    I know where they are!!!

They hang out on the Mighty Mississippi with me. They are heaviest during the wee hours of the night in the middle of June. MILLIONS of em! The trees on the islands twinkle like crazy. If I saw it on a movie, I'd swear it was special effects.

The kids noticed their near absence while we were there on a family road trip that makes National Lampoon's Vacation seem like a nice smooth trip.:( Got to spend a little extra time in Sealy when we popped the lugs on the burb's drive tire while pulling the portable living room . Anyhoo that was the worst of what happened, and we all made it back safely

    Naw, It warnt a Chebby

It was the GMC  Gotta love em. I could go on about how they're just about all I've owned and how the G's that weren't up to snuff received a bow tie instead, but I won't :D

Anyhoo, I learned the importance of keeping the ol toque wrench handy and actually using it instead of assuming the last person to mount the wheel got it right... especially with 6,000 lbs hanging on teh backside. The amazing thing is that we made it 1500 miles before they let loose
