The ID on the block behind the distributor is either F1G12TH or F1012TH. Would other block casting numbers help? Thanks for any help.
That link looks like it is about identifying V8 engines and parts. I didnt see anything for I6. Thanks
Rus, If you have the original engine it is either a 230 or a 292. The 292 is taller and the side covers are probably at least 7" tall while the two sidecovers on the 230 are about 4". The casting numbers on block on the same side as the distributor would be the way to identify for certain.
I have the casting number too. Its 3877178. From one site I looked at it says it is a 1962-78 230-250. Im not sure how to narrow it down. I would say the side covers are 4".
RustT65, check out this website (club) I know some of these guys. http://inliners.org/ by the way, another way to identify a 292... 230 & 250 have motor mounts directly across from eachother, 292 has "offset" motor mounts as the distributor is located towards the front of the engine. Leyland
By the way, your truck is looking sweeeet... I love the patina look with a good set of white walls. Leyland
Thanks Leyland. I have been showing this truck 3-4 times a month. It really attracts some attention. I even got a trophy a few weeks ago for Most Unique. Who knew. I went and looked again. The mount are not offset. So this has to be the 230-250. Now, how can I tell if this is the size engine the truck came with? Is there a number in the VIN to tell me that?
Hi RusT65. When I purchased my 78 Camaro I took the VIN # to the chevy dealership... they decoded it & informed me the T-tops were not from factory but were installed as an "option". My car is a 78 so I don't know if the dealership can tell you anything about older vehicles. I haven't looked up anything on my truck yet (I changed the motor anyways) I would think the fellas on this forum would be able to help you, just keep on asking questions... These guys are the best I've found! however if you can't find what you're looking for you could send an email to the "inliners.org" people... they know those engines inside & out! I was going to sell my 292 until I met a fella at a car show who was a inliner who convinced me to keep it... Maybe someday when my Horsepower days are over! (three in the tree definitly had to go...) I would love to see some more pictures of your truck, post or send to email if you're like me and can't figure out how to post! justinleyland@gmail.com Leyland
