OK, I give, what is the secret to getting the windshield wipers off of there shaft. I understand there is a locking mechanism but I haven't figured out how to release the mechanism. There is no room to put a screw driver in there and I tried a scrib to no avail. What do you guys use. I know its a stupid question but I suspect that someone has a trick that I haven't figured out. Help, Dave

ps I did search the threads before I wrote this.

If they have been on there for quite some time.... chances are they are fused on.
You should be able to get them off with liberal amounts of penetrating oil while rocking the arms off the studs off with a pair of vice grips { tape the arms off before, so the jaws don't score the surfaces}.

Make sure you goop them up good with anti-seize compound before re-installing them.

Thanks all, I have seen the link but still raise the question what it the secret to tripping the locking mechanism. The wiper appears move up and down on the shaft but until I trip the locking mechanism It won't come off. What am I missing. Sorry to be so stupid on this. Dave

I use a flathead screwdriver underneath the wiper to trip the catch and spread the pulling power.

OK...I think they are all telling you the same thing...but.....on many of these wipers, they just slide off because they are nicely worn...others take a little rocking back and forth...others take a little oil...and others "who knows".

The lock you are talking about and others is a little flat metal piece that is hard to see at times...sometimes you can only see it from inside a vehicle...it is at a 90 degree angle to the main shaft...On the side toward the actual blade. If you move that slightly toward the blade and rock it off...it should come off...It is at the base as it slide on the shaft...as DZ T said ...sometimes it gets rusted enough that it becomes like one piece...almost.

    Good luck,

What everyone else said ~ they're often well stuck in place , after using some penetrant , I like to use two levers 180? apart to lift straight up off the shaft .

It doesn't take a whole lot of force , careful not to break anything .
