Hey guys, can anyone tell me if this is a correct vintage for my 48? I haven't seen one like it?

I do have one that is larger that uses oil but not sure which one is correct for the year.

I'm thinking the oil bath would be the original one.

    Rick,
That same stile breather is on mine and they are VERY,VERY, EXSPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !. To replace that would be in the area of +++++250 $. Somewhere there is a photo of my engine compartment after the rebuild.
somewhere on the thread below you will see the breather on my pickup.

Here's what I would do if I were you. I'd clean both of them up, paint them, put the cute little repop decals on them and then put them on your engine one at a time and then say "Dang, I like that one there!" Then, I'd tighten up the screw and nut and go on about doing everything else I wanted to get done on the truck. Then I'd carefully pack the other one away and save it for when I'd finished the truck and decided to use the other one!:D

Have fun with your truck and don't get bogged down with "It's got to be perfect and every part has to be the EXACT part". That's what makes YOUR truck unique!

From what I have read, either could have come from the factory. The oil bath could be ordered for heavy dust conditions, the other for more urban uses. The small one is with my 53.

    Yes And No

What you have there is the standard air maize filter for 216 engines but someone has modified it by throwing away the maize part and fitting the modern (vastly better) micronic paper element .

This is a $10.00 item on Flea-Bay or any Autojumble as it filters poorly and is the primary cause for engine wear . (poor filtration of dust in the intake air)

Chevy also offered an extra cost , RPO oil bath typ air filter option , it's much better and is significantly quieter too .

If you run ATF instead of light machine oil in the oil bath one , it will become Self-Cleaning and after a few thousand miles , the filtering medium will have better flow along with better filtration , allowing more power and better fuel economy too .

The downside of oil bath typ air filters is : if you ever have a backfire , the oil will splatter out all over your engine compartment .

Re-pop decals are available for both types very cheaply from Chevy Duty , the host of this site .

    I hope this helps .

    Thanks

I like Ken's idea. Think I'll fix em both up and then decide. Looks like the filter element is a standard WIX part number.

Outragiously warm here today---61. Even got some small parts painting done. Back to 26 tonight though.

    Thanks again,
    Rick

    Good Plan !

That's what I did , I have two of each (for dual carbys) and cannot make up my mind .

Plus , I have a few Passenger cars ones I picked up over the years , my old
'46 3100 had a nifty 1937 Passenger car dry air filter , it was tall so as to better muffle intake honk...

I miss that one , it generated much tech talk anytime I opened the hood .

Cheap Stuff @ Pomona Swap Meet

    Robert ;

You gotta DIG ~ I see those Air Maize filters for $10.00 all the time .

I bought one off Flea-Bay for $5.00 , it was on an old 216 Carter W-1 carby no one wanted...

I bought my dual carby 235 intake manifold with freshly rebuilt Rochester 'B's for $250.00 from a nice kid who got frustrated after buying and installing it but not knowing how to synchronize the dual carbies....

he was nice so I didn't even bargain , I gave his his initial asking price of $250.00...

The stuff is out there but you have to know what's what and look where it isn't supposed to be , that's where the really good cheap stuff lies .

I am sure you know to never , _EVER_ pick up a part and ask " hey , will this fit my old 235 ? "

Out in the Mojave desert, I was out just out site seeing and stopped and asked a lady about an F1 she had sitting next to their garage. She did not want to sell it however offered me a Massey Harris tractor for $200, the price the salvage yard offered her. I bought it, cleaned the fuel tank and changed the carb, it fired up after pulling it about 100 feet. :D

Seeing you have a few extra of those neat little breathers, how about letting me buy two for $10 a piece? :)

    Paper Filter

I have that same air filter with the copper mesh and oil bath, where can I get a micronic paper filter to fit it?

Good scores are everywhere but when you want something for your ride it seems no one has what you need or expect you to pay a high price.

That tractor went for $2900 and all I did was play with the fuel system.
The copper inserts for those little breathers can get pricey also.

    Convert To Paper Element

Simple : take the mesh out and hand carry the rest of the (now cleaned and re-painted) filter to Pep Boys , Kragens etc. where they stock all the air filters out in the open and grab the smaller ones off the shelf until you find one that fits *perfectly* ~ be nice and don't mash the boxes etc. , etc. and they won't mind , just tell them you lost the old element , not that you're converting it to paper .

You'll find one in due time ~ I figure to die in my old '49 so I just wait & keep my eyes open all the time , I wanted to go back to a pedal starter but guys quoted me like $100.00 for nasty rusty linkage no starter etc. , I went out to the Milliken Pick-A-Part where they hade a nice old '53 1.5 Ton farm truck and bought the starter for $30.00 and the linkage complete for $5.00.....

    Like that .

I also put a pice of cardboard on my back when I go to swap meets , I print in big easy to read letters : WANTED : old Chevy AIR CLEANER or whatever and so many people stop me to beg me to come and take the ' junk ' off thier hands it's amazing ~ I carry a pad of paper and pencil...

Try it , it works .

    Paper element #

The one in mine is WIX 42373. I'm sure anyone can cross the part number if they don't carry WIX.

I will check on the WIX filter number. I also found one at Jim Carter.
