Belt/pully problems

Hi,

I have a 72 K20 4X4 with a 350 eng, short water pump, and the long arm alternator mount.

I hate to say it but i'm at the end of my whits with trying to solve a belt squeel issue, The pulleys all appear to be lined up correctly, cant see any miss alignment at all. the pulleys have what i deem as normal wear that is equal on both sides of the V groove.

I have tryed new belts, both Gates and Dayco to no avail., also tryed going 1/2" shorter length than stock. The alternator seem fine, was replaced about 10 years ago, definantly not alternator bearings.. The new alt did have a new pully in it. The bearings went bad in the orig alt from over tightening to stop belt squeal.

The power steering pump is only about 2 years old, water pump about 3 years old.

I have tryed removing both belts and of course the squeel is gone, installed the alternator belt and get the squeel.

The P.S. belt runs from the crank pulley to the pump only.

I have tryed to buy replacement pulleys but all my parts store can come up with is the chrome Mr Gasket stuff and it is not a match for my truck, nothing would line up..

Any advice or suggestions short of buying a $1700 pulley system would be appreciated, maybe a wider belt?

Trying to stay stock if possible, but wound concider going to a long water pump and different alt bracket moving alt to passanger side.

Hey I usually post on the older truck sites but I seen your problem and thought I could help. I run the same pulley setup as you on my "61" and it sounds to me like your Alt. belt is running too deep in the groove. So what you need to do is run a wider belt and fill up the groove. I don't have any squeal on mine and that's what I did. My father who retired as a master technician says this is a common problem and this was the proper fix. Also on your power steering pump if you put studs in the block instead of bolts it is easier to mount the pump and then you can use washers to get the proper pulley alignment. I also went through the same problems for years on my 66 with SWP. Here is how I finally fixed it. I replaced all the pulleys the old ones were worn out. I used the header brackets from Mr. Gasket and added washers behind the alt to make it tight. I then bought a new power steering bracket from summit racing. Not a whole lot of cost but it did the trick. I did go piece by piece and the power steering bracket finally fixed what little slippage was left.

These are the belt #'s on my truck, Alternator belt# 13AV1395 and 17550. Power steering belt # 11AV0865 and 15340...Each belt has 2 #'s on it and they came from Kragens / O Rielys Auto parts. I hope this helps....Big Tim

Well so far all the pulleys from the auto parts store didn't come close to matching my truck so i had to teturn them, maybe its just the counter person not knowing enough? but we looked up supersedence manuals and everything.. Thanks tho, wish i had some part numbers to work with.

You might want to try Jegs or Summit to get the correct pulleys. Also double check to see if you have a SWP. It is important that the crank and water pump pulleys are correct but the power steering and alt. are the same for both. This is my set-up on my 66 with SWP. Some of it you should be able to get off the shelf at the parts store. Are you heads drilled for acc's. If they are that opens a bunch more bracket options.

try locating pulleys from a covette vendor.

also , if the pulleys are polished on thier wear surface from too much slipping, sand blast them with course sand.

I will never buy chrome junk. they dont fit, wrong size, the balncer and water pump rub on each other and chrome plating makes them brittle so they crack and can take out accessories and radiator.
