The 60-61 hood is very hard to find in good condition even in the United States, and can cost up to $500 or more. Many people buy a parts truck just to get the hood. I currently have a 62-66 Chevy hood on my 1960 GMC and it took me over 5 years to find that one. I would like to have a 1960 Chevy hood on my truck, but have never found one worth buying at a price I can afford. Back when these trucks were new they were considered working appliances, not personal vehicles, and most suffered a lot of abuse. They are also prone to rust along the front edge and lower rear corners.

Many owners replaced the early "jet-pod" hood with the 62-66 design as they didn't like the older design, or it was seen as out of style. And once the original supply of spare hoods were used up, GM never made any more. Collision repairs at the dealer when these trucks were faily new would receive the 62-66 hood instead. For all these reasons relatively few 60-61 hoods in good condition remain. And because they are so bulky and heavy, shipping costs can equal the value of the hood.

The best source for an early hood is off a school bus or big truck because they are farther from the ground and don't usually get damaged or rusty. Sadly, the only good hoods I have found have been on trucks that are still being used and the hood is not for sale. Sorry this isn't much help, just wanted to explain why it may be a very difficult item to obtain.

    1960 hood

How can you tell the original hood from a reproduction?

What does a orignal 1960 hood look like. I just picked up a 1960 short box stepside to restore. My hood has a V shaped rib down the middle of the hood.

    Here's a 1960 Hood:

Currently nobody makes a reproduction steel hood for the 1960-1961.

One reason why they are hard to find is once the 1962 trucks came out the 1960-1961 hoods were considered gnarly and many folks swapped to the "newer" hood. As is often the case the rarity of something often turns into collectability, the exception of course being the AMC Pacer :D.

Thank You very much. It seems to be that i have a 1962 hood. I dont have a seat for my truck, does anyone know what kind of bench seat will work for the 1960.

    Thank You Matthew :

Matthew there are a lot of options:

My truck had a 1990 Chevy truck bench seat in it when I bought it. So that means any 1988 through 1998 should work too.

Jonzcustomshop posted this on another site, I have purchased parts from Jon and he is a wealth of knowledge on these old trucks:

Thank you fot the information. I went through all the parts for my 1960 SB and 90% of it is all there. Here is a list of what came with the truck. All body parts, powder coated frame, tires and wheels, all glass (less the small back window), front end to do a disc conversion, and power sterring, huge tote full of most of the nuts and bolts, head lights, marker lights, etc... Cab is already sandblasted and in primer. I paid $1000 for all of it.

An AMC Pacer... or a 60-61 Hood :D:cool::eek:? Sorry, just joking...

If you really want a 60-61 hood check out one or both of these fellas. They both specialize in 60-66 Trucks:

    Those Dang '60 ~ '61 Hoods

The problem is they tend to rust out badly around the turn signals .

Every time I see one of these hoods in perfect shape at my local junkyard , I point it to my brother and say ' there's another of those hard to find ones ' ~ the problem is : I have a yard full of old parts that are unobtanium but no one wants to buy so I stopped buying up rare parts .

If you're anywhere near Farm Country , go look in the back sides of the fields , there is always a Big 'Bolt quietly resting and it'll usually have good hood , doors , heater , dash and so on....
