Engine size determination ! That looks very much a 216 CID engine. The engine cover has the 2 bolts in top. But if you want to determine the block there should be a block number at the left side near the ignition device and cylinder top number aswell on the other side. Some of the guys here can help you to get the excact made of your engine . Good luck Martinius.
left side standing from front? as in starter motor side? i got home last night so i will have a look at the numbers some time today and post them.
Left and right are determined as if you were sitting in the vehicle. Right side would be YOUR driver's side, or the right side of the truck.
Your Engine ...Is clearly an early 235 CID unit , I gave a BIG sigh looking at your pix you Bucky Lugger ~ where are the normal gaping rust holes ?! . You have the beginnings of a shop truck there or , were it mine , a stone reliable easy to fix , cheap to run , long lasting Work Rig..... The choice is yours ~ save everything you take off especially the hardware and those two cute little sheet metal 3/8" tubes you'll find after it's all done ~ they go inside the rear ball housing mounts and are UNOBTANIUM these days . NICE TRUCK ! .
hey guys, found an engine block number but no head number, must be under valve cover???? engine number is 'XCR476362' what do all these mean? Thanks nate, she is a good strong truck, was shedded most her life. now her time has come to shine once again.

martinus the number i found is stamped on the machined surface next to where the dizzy comes out of the block. couldnt find any casted numbers as seen in pics on ->(http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=356268) makes me thinks 216 engine truck is chev "1420" 'Aussie built truck' not sure how this converts to US truck numbers, but is 3/4 Ton payload from old REGO certificate and vehicle loading plate on firewall Frustrated
Aussy decoding source I am 98 % shore the engine is a 216 CI engine. The stakebed sizes are mentioned in US "old chevy manuals" web side. Look it up and determine your truck model at first ! That changes eveything as it is licence produced in Australia. Any chances there is a chevrolet web source or chevy truck club you could contact ? Martinius.
martinus i am 98% shore of it being 216Ci also i've done a lil digging and... 1420 series track convert to Australian build and Canadian built load numbers. 1420 does convert to US 3600/3/4ton. i have also found 1 website so far for Aussie built chev trucks and there seems to be a fair bit of literature. i will read some more over the next day or so and post my findings. til then jed
classic vehicle sources Australia ! Some sources: Its obvious that Holden GM car compagny in Australia is the main source where the truck whas reassembled and given the 1420 series number fore a commercial truck. I know that the american Heritage center could help out with some historicall facts but better would be to contact the Heritage center in your beautifull Australia and ask them your questions. http://www.hcvc.com.au/ http://www.arthc.com.au/ http://www.gregwapling.com/hotrod/chev-trucks-47-55/holdenchev.html http://history.gmheritagecenter.com/wiki/index.php/1948,_The_First_Holden http://www.hcvc.com.au/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1270466398 http://www.ozrodders.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=45093
