It sounds like you don't have the hinge assembly which mounts the glove box door and the glove box. It attaches to the door opening in the dashboard with two screws on each side.

I've been using a MSD 6AL box with a MSD distributor in a street driven car for years and have found it to be completely reliable. I replaced a Unilite piece of junk with this system.
Spotweld cutters are a lifesaver but they just don't last long especially when cutting the harder, thicker material that the older vehicles were made out of. If you got 10 cuts out of one blade you did very well.
I don't think that a plastic tank in a place that could prove vulnerable in the event of a rear end collision is a good idea even if they did do it on TV. I'm using stainless steel.
