Hello, has someone a picture how the ignition distributor is fixed in the right position? Ask Wolfgang
I need to quit this conversation because my knowledge is GMC engines and you have a Chevy. Hopefully another forum member will answer.
As requested here is a pic of a typical distributor setup on a Chevy Thriftmaster. Note that the number one cylinder plug wire is roughly at the 4 o'clock position on the cap and also note the vacuum advance inlet is pointing forward. This distributor is set with the number one cylinder at top dead center and rotor pointing to the 4 o'clock position. Your rotor may be and most likely is in a different position.
One question, what means the "A" and the "R" on the plate from the distributor, look here: https://www.kripahle-online.de/unterricht/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/img_3537.jpg Wolfgang
The "A" is advance and "R" is retard in regards to ignition timing. The lines are a scale in 2° increments going from 10° retard to 10° advance. The distributor pictured is set at 2° advanced. Remember this is only a scale used for adjustment purposes, actual timing degrees are set using a timing light with engine rpm set at the proper specification.
Set the A/R pointer to zero before setting timing with a timing light. That way one can experiment with advancing the timing using the A/R setting and still be able to return the timing to the factory specified setting without using a timing light. My 228" GMC six runs best when set to 6 degrees A.
