What is the proper guage of wire I should use from my battery to starter using a 6 volt system? I'm not sure on the guage of wire I'm currently using, but it gets hot to the touch if I have to crank for a little bit.
OO Or the heaviest you can find. Do you have a tractor supply near by? They would have some heavy cables for use on old 6 volt tractors.
Battery Cables Originally it was 1 gauge , going to 0 or 00 is good , this includes ALL oldies , 12 volt rigs too . Remember : it's critical to connect the negative battery cable directly to the engine block or the tranny , not to the frame then a jumper to the driveline . You'll have to get the pimple crusher behind the counter to open the catalog up and READ then order you up the proper length you need . I usually buy 0 gauge welding cable and solder on my own ends , this makes it not only crank super fast but the battery charges faster too .
Don't forget that the ground cable needs to just as large as the battery to starter cable. Best to attach it directly to one of the starter motor bolts.
