Need some advice on installing the drive shaft on a 53 Chevy pick-up. First a little background: I 'trashed' the U joint and cracked the tranny case and had to replace all. We have installed the 'new' tranny and now need to detach and clean out/up the drive shaft and the differential. In terms of order, does it matter if the differential is fixed first and then to re-install the drive shaft or first the shaft? Thanks for your advice.

I am having a big electrical problem with my 53 Chevy pickup. I had some wires burn out and ignition that broke. I replaced the ignition switch and think I hooked up the wires correctly and also replaced wires from coil to panel and wires from ignition to correct connections. This is a six volt truck and even before the problems the battery would keep wearing down (I bought it new) and I would recharge with a trickle charger. It will start it but the next time I seem to have no charge. Don't know if starter is bad or what. Also when I push the floor starter (with battery charged) and the key not in the ignition it turns over. I haven't checked all the connections but don't understand why battery doesn't hold charge or apparently not re-charge. Also when I start it and its idling and turn on head lights the discharging/charging gauge drops down significantly but doesn't seem to register and re-charge as it idles. I hope someone out there can offer some perspective. Jim G

Advice on replacement of axle-shaft oil seal on 53 Chevy 1/2 ton. Has anyone had experience with this removal/replacement? I detected a likely oil leak on rear tire of the 53 Chevy truck and don't know what to do. The Chevy Truck manual I have is a 1948-51 Shop manual and in material on Rear Axle problems it says for removal of brake drum from axle shaft "On (1948-50) Models, install wheel cylinder clamp, KMO-145, on brake cylinder." it then goes on but I don't know what to do with the 1953 model. Also on instructions for removal of wheel and axle shafts, it goeson to say: "insert special bearing puller J-1436 and remove bearing retainer and oil seal."
Does anyone know what these tools are OR what I need to do to be able to replace the seal? I will appreciate guidance and/or where I can find replacement info on line or easily accessible. Thanks for your assistance. Jim G

New bed for old (1953) Chevy truck: I am in the process of planning to replace the rotten/rusted bed from my 53 Chevy (3100). I know I can buy new kits on line but I have a friend willing to fabricate the bed wood from an available stock. I will buy the bed strips, angle strips and bolts, etc. But in order to cut the wood to fit I need the specifications for properly fabricating the wood strips. Does anyone have those specs available or know where I can get the model information (without having to purchase a set and then return it)? Thanks for your advice.

I need some help on vehicle ID for my 53 Chevy 3100 pick up. I am in the process of registering this truck in California which I bought from my sister-in-law in New Mexico.
I have the title signed by her that was issued in August, 1989. She had this truck for the last 23 years registered in NM. On the title the Vehicle ID number is BLCC696918. On the truck's front left door is the metal plate on which is the following VIN: H53K03949. Obviously this is different. The engine on the 53 Chevy is a 235, a replacement, which seems to have the number F4115U KAAA02848. My sister in law indicated that this truck while she had it had several engine changes.
So my questions have do with how to present this information the the Calif DMV so I can get this registered. Is the number on the title an engine number? Any/all advice is welcome.

Need some guidance on replacement of door windows on a 53 Chevy truck. The current windows are plexiglas and when replaced it appears that the door channel guides were removed. I have the old ones but need to be replaced which I can purchase. The challenges is how does one install the side window channels without dismantling the whole door? Anyone with advice and/or pictures can be a great guide for me. Here's looking at you. Jim G

Need some guidance on door window replacement for a 53 Chevy truck. I have new glass to replace the plexiglas that was installed years ago. Also years ago when they installed the plexiglas, apparently they also removed the door glass channel guides. I can purchase new guides but how does one stall these without dismantling the whole door. I do have the old door glass window tracks but need advice for the channel guides.
