    Hi Guys !

Shop has been SUPER busy since the start of the virus thing. I think boredom got people back onto long dormant projects and as ones discovered their limitations due to either lack of tools or knowledge the projects ended up with us. Shop is designed to accommodate 15 vehicles but can accept 17...

    54 hydramatic in a 55.1

Our scrap pile now even has several sbc V8's. The circle track guys snap up the 350's but the 305's, 307's, and even a 265 are sitting out in the weather. EVERYTHING is going the LS route now. We pulled a nearly new 350 out of a woman's 1950 Ford pickup and replaced it with an LS and a sweet...

    1950 tranny issues

Even quicker way to check clutch release is to jack up one rear wheel, put in gear, have someone hold clutch pedal down, turn rear wheel. Wheel should turn as easily as it does when transmission is in neutral.

    1950 tranny issues

If all works fine when not running IT IS THE CLUTCH!!!!! The ONLY difference in the equation between running and not running is the clutch. If you have access to a lift have someone hold the clutch pedal down, remove dust cover, and use a wooden stake stop the clutch disc with engine...

    54 hydramatic in a 55.1

Forget all the above. My brain slips into neutral sometimes and forgets past lessons. GM did all the work for you---just get a 3/4T set up which is torque tube at the front and open in the rear.

    54 hydramatic in a 55.1

Lots of machining to convert a torque tube trans to accept an open drive shaft. Would be easier to put the entire 54 tube set up onto the 55.1 but it would not be a bolt in. If the spring length and front I-bolt and rear shackle brackets are at the same spot on both frames it would ease the...

    Help Identifying Brakes/Installing Parking Brake

Why mess with a cross shaft to try to connect cave man brakes to space age open rear end when making the whole set up modern is so cheap, easy, and simple. Thread the rod that runs from pedal to cross shaft, install equalizer "banana" on that rod, run cable loop from backing plate on one side to...

    Stand by generators

I figured as much but what threw me is that solar/wind power home units can put excess back into the line making the meter run backward.

    Stand by generators

I have a 6kw and a 7.5kw generator. Can I combine them in some way to have 13.5kw available? Neither can handle shop demand during outage.

    Starter swap

Forgot about the stomp starter link; been many years since an AD or TF truck has left the shop with anything but an LS. Did have a 56 GMC owner that wanted a high performance 6 cylinder so we put a 300 Ford (12 port head, 7 main bearings) into it. He returned a couple years later and got an LS.

    Starter swap

Remove either cable from batter to prevent sparking. Remove battery cable and smaller wire from starter---takes 5/8 wrench if original. Remove two starter mounting bolts---they make a special curved starter wrench BUT you can use a regular wrench to just move the bolt and nut a tiny bit then...

Shorted alternator - no power to fuse panel

No information so I'm going to GUESS it has a 216 or 235 engine with a stomp starter. ALL (as in EVERYTHING) this needs is a positive battery cable to the starter post and a negative to the engine/starter. Reverse if a GMC (positive ground). If the starter turns the engine over with this bare...

    Calling Coilover (Evan)

Andy, Bill Hanlon is the resident guru on electrical subjects. Probably the easiest would be to put a relay (30 or ? amps) between the head light switch and the dimmer switch. It takes a small draw from your factory head light to dimmer wire to activate the relay which can then pass a high...

    New guy from SE Washington

Nice truck. If it runs good and doesn't ping on regular gas it's got the right pistons and heads combo.

    Charging system help

Andy, it has been years since a project left the shop with a generator on it but a couple of $.02 cents of suggestions. First do a search on "electronic regulators" for 12v generator and see if one matches your need. Just bolt on and run---no skills needed which is good since ones that know how...

    Size of screws engine hood

What bolts exactly are you asking about? If the ones holding the pivot arms to the hood they are shoulder bolts with a 5/16 fine thread stud and a 5/8 hex head. I think our host sells them.

    Out And About

Do a search for "refillable aerosol spray can" and you can put any color paint in it you need. A bit pricey ($50??) but does away with guessing with an off the shelf color. We use them where there is danger of dragging an air hose across a fresh painted surface to use a touch up gun.

    Out And About

Our host has an interior paint for AD's they call "champagne", part #31-014. Some of the older trucks had what was called "Taupe". We make mistakes, especially on dashes, so we use a base coat/clear coat that is near dead on and is from a Mitsubishi. The bc/cc can be spotted in almost like old...

    Brake and clutch pedal rubbers

I clean the steel pedal operating room clean and scuff the rubber on the pad. Then coat with windshield urethane rubber sealant and the pads are in place till they WEAR off. Forget about removing them without trimming with a knife and knocking the remainder off with a stiff wire brush in a...

    E brake

It is a 10 bolt rear end with the 8.5 inch ring gear, most likely from the 70's. If the spring saddles are welded to the bottom of the axle tubes or moved inward/outward but show no signs of brackets ever being welded to the top, front, or sides then it is from a Camaro, Firebird, or Trans Am...
