PROBABLY clutch head. I think that was in mine and the 53. Looked like a sheetmetal screw.
Use thicker steel and turn it up till you get the hang of the bead and the speed and flow. Try spacing the pieces a little apart and fill welding...
I used Tung oil on the 53. Sit overnight with the grain end in a bucket of 50/50 Tung and terp. Then flip to other end and soak most of the day....
Don't know if the spar will go on top of all that oil. Leave it oiled and you can repair as neccessary.
