Rusty Nuts The advice of a good penetrant and allowing it to work is spot on ~ As is whatcking it afew times to shock the rust and help the penetrant to wick in ~ when they suggest tightening the fastener after you've soaked it , only 1/16 th a turn will do ~ as soon as you feel it turn , spray more penetrant and work it bck and forth , back and forth , with each movement it'll get looser and looser... Is no one reading my 292 engine thread on the '67 ~'72 pages ? .
As soon as I have time to put a 220 outlet in, I am gonna pick up a new compressor. Hopefully that will be sooooon... I don't care for Ace, they are way too over priced, although, they have a much better selection of hardware than most places in town. Tap and die set is a must, I have 2 or 3 so I will be using those as well. I love Harbor Freight for some things, but have having to drive to Tucson to go. I normally load up once or twice a year when I do though. Wish SV would get one here, I think it would do pretty well!
only thing i buy fron ace is their nuts and bolts and their brand spray paint because it has the fan spray, which sprays larger areas better we're gettin a tractor supply on fry blv past target...
A friend of mine checked into buying into a H.F. franchise { & S.V. was one of the locations he was shooting for }. Now all he has to do is come up with the $1,000,000 H.F. wants to give him a store.

Garage time Got a few hours of garage time, in which i could work on what I wanted to work on. Cleaning/organizing the garage may make my work easier, but that will have to wait for a little while. I was able to get the grille off, the front fenders, inner fenders, radiator, and most of the wiring pulled back. Will pull the motor tonight, maybe the transmission by the end of the weekend. Then I will be working on cleaning the frame so I can paint the front half, and bolt on the drop axle that Sid sent a few weeks back. Progress!
Pulling motor/trans. So my progress didnt go exactly how I had planned. After searching the 'ol interwebz, I had read many posts on different forums that suggested it is easier to pull the motor/bell housing/trans. as a unit. And that is what the service manual suggested too. Well......... After trying to finagle it out, and banging my head, I realized there was just no way it was coming out without jacking the cab up. So I starting searching forums again... Note to all that are pulling a 235 with a manual 4 speed (SM420): Remove the transmission first. It wont clear the crossmember and the bottom of the cab. Read on one post that it is 12", and the clearance is only 10". I'm sure some of you guys that have been around for awhile may already know this. Lesson learned.
yours is lookin a lot like mine. wednesday ill try a 2nd oil pan gasket to see if i can get it right for a 3rd time. then hopefully i can pull it out of the garage and start puttin the front end back together
Was it because of a shotty pan gasket that it was leaking? Would hate to have to pull the motor again after install (or re-do anything for that matter).
YUUUUUP... i got a game plan now. mout mount is out of the way and im gonna rgb (or whatever the rubber gasket shit is called) the gasket on, on the ends, let dry and then install it.
Motor/transmission are out. Since I was doing this by myself, I had a bit of an issue with the transmission. I had put a jack under it, removed the 4 mounting bolts, and started to separate it from the bellhousing. It wanted to roll, probably rolling off of the jack if I had pulled it all the way out. So I had remembered seeing some contraption that a guy built that was 2x4's with a boat winch on it to lift the transmission from the access hole in the cab, then lower it to the ground. Remembering this gave me the idea of using the 2x4, drilling holes, and bolting to the top of the transmission to keep it from rolling. After I pulled the trans. back far enough to clear the shaft, I unbolted the 2x4 and lowered the jack to the ground. Worked well since I didnt have anyone around to help me.
give me a call chad! i have 4 days a week off. ill give you a hand! i just scored a chevy bench seat of my uncle today
Necessity is the mother of invention, right? Cool idea for those of us that like to do it on our own and not ask for help.
