I agree with you experience is priceless. We have no mechanical experience so we are hurting in that department. I'm sure we'll figure it out. And I can't wait for the smile. Figure I'll let him drive and I'll be the one smiling.

Feel free to ask away. These trucks aren't complicated. It is a tractor with a body, made so they can be repaired in the middle of the field, should they break down.

Karen, don't get too obsessed about the destination and miss the fun of the ride if you catch my drift;)

Get it running and keep it running as much as possible while you work on the checklist. If you can drive it around, the interest factor stays high. When it is blown apart, it is easy to get overwhelmed and give up.

Tractor with a body I like that discription. LOL Can't drive it as of yet. My Dad told me he would help me in one condition. That is we tear it all apart and repair it the right way. The right was I guess is his way. So that's where we are tore apart.

The "Right Way" is usually the narrow way. That's the one most folks will not take. Its harder, more costly and time consuming. But, in the end you will be very proud you didn't cut any corners. The parts are out there, the time it takes to find them is more costly, but in the end you will be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment. I think on this site you will see that we, more then anyone appreciates, enjoy your hardwork and diligence.

We are behind you and will help you! Just do it....for Dad's sake. You will heir it to someone...someday.

    Fwiw ;

The reason I drive / work / love old 6 Cylinder GM Trucks is : they're Anvils with wheels :p .

As Russ so rightly pointed out , they were designed for Farmers who'd never maintain them until they stopped in the middle of a field , usually 1/2 way through mowing (guess how I know this detail) ....

Just keep on taking baby steps with your dad ~ you're *SO* lucky ~ .

To - morrow I get to spend some time with my son (whom I trained) changing the timing belt on SWMBO's wretched . hated Toyletta Corroded Sedan , we're giving it to her Granddaughter as soon as this is done and I have it re - painted .

I love spending time with my boy and I know your Pops loves spending time with you , even on the hard , dirty , nasty bits :D .

You are so RIGHT. Spending time with my Dad has always been my most favorite thing to do. He has taught me so much in my life time and so much more to teach. I have always stuck to him like glue. Love Love Love him and all that he has taught me. We will continue to plug away at her till she is on the ROAD again.

Hey Karen. I had the luxury of having 2 trucks to make a good one out of.... for the first 2 years, I could drive the 'donor' truck when I went out to work on the other one, and that helped keep me 'fired up'. The grandkids, and my 2 Grownup Girls, liked riding/driving the old truck. Now the donor is disabled, with the engine being prepped for swap to the readied chassis, then mount the cab, add doors, and load up to bring home, (Houston area). Anxious to get to that part. I expect to make a little quicker progress then. Meanwhile, there are some pics here if you click on my name and look at the album. Take Care.

    At it again

WOW finally nice enough in the garage for us to work on the ole 52. I got my first experience at bondo and Dad wasn't around to supervise. Let's just say its a good thing the sander was around. Really ... not so bad not enough hardner but after reading the instructions on the can away I went. Dad came out and after a long hard look said "well Sis it looks pretty good" :) I was pretty proud. So the right front fender is ready for primer again. Yahoo. Hope everyone is having a great day. :)

Weather's been great here, but can't make the time to go down and get some work done. Kinda' sucks to have to drive 250 miles to work on my truck. Someday, she'll be here at home to finish up.

Good on ya, Karen! One piece at a time.
The way the wind has been blowing this year, I probably should be doing the same thing. Get my 3M paint removing wheel and a fender and let all the dust blow to some other state.
    Bondo~ ain't it fun stuff?
Keep up the good work and as always, we love pictures!

Great thread. Post updates and pics as you go.
Time with your dad is priceless. Good that you realize it before it's too late.
You and he are both very fortunate.

    Time with dad

Hey Karen, I am right there with you. A big project ahead and my good old dad to help out. What is great is my son, though a bit too little to understand, has been right next to us with a wrench in his hand playing with "daddy's cool truck!" Smart kid and a great experience for my dad and I both. I wasn't around for much of my dad's resto of a 70 corvette but we are going to make up for lost time. My mom is pretty sick now so it has really reminded us all that time is short and we need to grab every chance we can to spend quality time together.
Keep up the hard work and post some more pictures for us as you go. It is inspiring for me for sure!!
