1959 Gauge Cluster Removal

I just purchased a 1959 Apache 32. I need to remove the gauge cluster because only the oil pressure gauge seems to work at the moment.

When I remove the three screws on the front of the cluster, I am able to pull the cluster out a little but it then seems to hang. Should I just apply more pressure, or is there something else I need to remove before I pull the cluster out?

The screws are pretty much what holds the thing in. There are some lips and edges that seem to hange up every time so you have to give it some gentle wiggles and nudges. Try pulling a corner out first. Also remember that you have all the wiring attached to the back of the guage cluster, along with the brass tubing that goes to the oil pressure guage. That stuff makes it a little harder to get out, and you have to be careful not to break or bend anything.

On my 59 guage cluster there is just barely enough room to get your fingers behind it once you remove the three screws and pull it out a little. Dont pull to hard or you could break or damge a terminal or wire. Un- plug all the guage lights, blinkers and speedo cable, and dis-connect the oil pressure line. Make sure you label all the wires so you know where they go. You can also access the wireing from under the dash if you can fit in tight spaces. Good Luck

I can get to most of the wiring so I will disconnect stuff first, I have only applied light pressure so once I have everything disconnected, I'll try pulling harder.

Hey,
Some times you have to use a flat bladed screw driver around the edges to help pull it out.The opening is tight on some dashes.

undo the oil pressure line on the engine side and it will give you a lot more room to work. Then try doing what the others said.
