283 with 350 xmsn

I have a 1964 c-10 i took the 283 out and rebuilded it then i decided to add a 350 xmsn (I replaced a 3 speed manual) now the front seems a lot higher then the rear. Will the orignal drive shift still work and can i use the emergency brake cross member as a xmsn cross member.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Aug-01-02 AT 07:57 PM (CST)]Hi Marsh. I am going to assume that you are asking (bottom line) if the e-brake mount can be used for the auto trans mount. Quick answer.... NO. The three speed had no rear mount point and the e-brake mount is not going to work.

You need to get a trans crossmember. Lots of suppliers carry "universal" transmission crossmembers that fit our trucks. That's what you need.

The drive shaft will most likely need to be shortened. Measure from the back (inside) of the yoke on the trans to the back of the inside of the yoke of the rear end. Take that measurement and your drive shaft to a shop that can shorten and BALANCE the shaft.

Thank you for the info, any ideal what drive shaft will fit (One Piece drive shaft that is or should i just get one cut to fit.

Hay Marsh, Try a 70's truck one piece shaft. Like I said, you will most likely need to have it shortened. Look for one in a automatic trans'ed truck at the local bone yard. You will need to make sure the yoke on the trans/shaft and shaft/rear-end will be compatable with a universal joint you can get over the counter. I had to get a special universal joint to use on the yoke for the drive shaft/trans coupling, but found one at NAPA. I got lucky and found "the old guy" at the NAPA counter. I described what I had, (one piece drive shaft mating to granny 4-speed) and he says, (I'm not BS'n, this is a quote), " Oh yah, You need a bastard u-joint." He goes in the back and returns with the goods. The previous owner had installed a non-bastard joint that caused the rear bearing and seal to fail on the trans. Good luck.
