'64 3 speed shifter lube?

I've got a 64 step side with 3 speed on the column, it has become very hard to cross over in the neutral position to go from 1st to 2nd/3rd. The linkage works fine on the trans., so it must be between the lever and control arms on the steering column. I lubed the flanges (on the steering column), but am not sure if it's worth pulling the wheel to get at the top end of the column. Thoughts or ideas?

I had the same problem with a 66. I fixed mine by replacing the upper steering column bearing. It was worn out and there is a small plate that is part of the column and shift lingage that was lodging against the bearing. Good luck
