Broke distributor cap spring ....

I was cleaning and painting the distributor. Some how I stressed and broke the clip.

(One on the left)

Any suggestions on where I can find one? If anyone has a spare I'd be glad to buy it.

Great source of those parts one just can't seem to find anywhere else. Looking for parts? Bet Joe has 'em.

Unrelated, but applies to distributor. It's been talked about on this site several times before. I installed a Pertronix ignition module in my distributor today, and a Flamethrower ignition coil. It will be a while before I get to put it to use, but it completely eliminates points and condenser. Cost about $120 total and gives much hotter spark for easier starts, smoother idle and less maintenance. Why heck, even Nate pushes the system, so it's gotta' be good. Just wanted to inform you of its existence.

I bought one. I think they are great also. (I am an early convert having installed one on a car some years ago when they first came out). You remind me I need to get the coil. Where did you get yours?

Since I am doing a frame-off restore I decided I will get the truck running again and then install Pertronix module. Reduce the multiple variables after all the wiring etc.

I'd be interested in hearing how yours is working. Somewhere on this site someone posted that they work so well you hardly need to use the choke and their truck just fires up easily, every time. Nice.

I did the same, except I'm getting closer to start up, so I went ahad and did the ignition upgrade. I got my coil from Pertronix too, but OReilly's has, or can get, the coil. Nate says, and I agree, be sure and get the coil with 3 ohm resistance, part #40511. I used 1168LS Ignitor, based on my dist. number. I'm a ways from being able to re-start my truck, but working in that direction. Will post when I get her going. :D
 
Pertronix & Coils

It's very important to math the coil's impedance with both the truck supplied voltage AND the Pertronix Ignitor used ~ failure to match the impedance (Ohms across the coils smaller terminals) will result in n spart some day , usualy faR FROM HOME ETC......

a 3 oHM COIL IS FOR A VOLT SYSTEM .

Oops .

Be SURE to open the spark plug gaps up to .035" ~ .045" ! .

OK Nate, are you trying to trip me up? You left out a number between "A" and "VOLT". :eek:
I have an 1168LS Ignitor, and in its packaging it calls for a 3 ohm coil, which is Pertronix #40511. All for 12volt Neg. ground system, for anyone who's interested in the details. :rolleyes:

Use what they suggest , just be sure to test it before you install it .
 
I have the same Ignitor. In reading the instructions it calls for leaving the condenser in. Is that correct? This surprised me since my understanding was that the condenser was only there to protect the point set ....

On another top, I realize I will two items-

-Valve adjustment procedures
-Engine time procedures

If there are some good links for both, I appreciate being referred to them.

I just went and got my installation instructions for the Pertronics 1168LS, and the only reference to retaining the points and condenser is to have them as backup parts if needed, "as the ignitor installation does not alter the interior configuration of your distributor". Take a look and see if that's the case with your instructions as well. Also, the wiring diagrams make no mention of placement of the condenser either. Hope this helps with your question about the Ignitor.

VWNate, AKA Nathan Hall, wrote a detailed procedure for adjusting valves on our 'hot water sixes'. Here's the website where you can find said procedure. Thanks to Nate, once again. :cool:

Where did you find the ignition module and coil that cheap?
 
I got mine from Summit.

Pertronix install. Really couldn't be simpler.

Remove dist. cap.....

Remove condensor and points, pass through wire block...

Drop in pertronix plate, locating on points pivot pin, then screw down with points screw...

Run wires through dist. body using grommet supplied. Push trigger over rotor shaft until seated on base, hook up to coil,...

Re install dist. cap and fire it up!
