change overs

I have recently got a hold of a 62 chevy stepside. I was wondering if there were and way to change the oil bath filter to a plain and less messy filter. Also, what would I need to change out my generator to and alt., if it can be done. And the last thing is, what in the world is the peice the holds the thermostat called? ??thermostathousing??

Yes you can put on a regular filter pt# 86-605 they work fine. Chevrolet droped the oil bath in 62 (i think they realized it was a bit messy) As for the other yes it is called a thermostat housing
