Does a 3836850 261 cyl head work on a 57 235 ?

Yes , it should .

Remember to have it magnafluxed before you have anything else done to it ~ the 850 is the last design (IIRC , possible) making it *very* crack resistant .

You'll still need to have ALL the valve guides replaced with proper bronze ones , new stellite valve seats is wise too .
