Drive Shaft Work

Going through the transmission on the 1953 3100. No surprises but have a couple of questions and need to find some replacement parts. Hoping someone can help with sources.

I am not familiar with torque tube type drive shafts. The yoke housing is chewed up a bit on the inside of the bell end. Is that a potential problem and should it be replaced? Also I will need a source for the "O" ring to seal the threaded end.



The drive shaft yoke itself is pretty rough and I would like to replace it. It has 17 splines. Also need to replace the U-joint.

Can anyone recommend sources for these items

U-Joint replacement is; http://www.classicparts.com/1940-54-U-Joint-Repair-Kit-1_2-Ton/productinfo/92-215/#.VZb81xtRHIU. Can't help with the ball socket or yoke. I will say that my ball socket was pretty scarred up on the inside as well, but as long as it is intact, without any cracks or splits, and is smooth enough where the flange and seal ride against it, it should seal properly. Thanks for the links. Today, doing some searching I found Chevy's of the 40's which, contrary to the name, has quite a bit of stuff for my truck.

Does anyone have experience with those folks?

They list a yoke so I will find out on Monday how that goes. Bill, do you recall if the threaded end of the yoke housing had an "O" ring or cork seal.

The reason I ask is that I see some rebuild seal kits that include a couple of cork seals.

You might be able to get the gasket kit at your local auto parts store

Felpro kit ES 72843

The seal is a cork empregnated quad ring, you will need to reuse your steel washers.

If Chevys of the 40's list a yoke jump on it.
Otherwise you'll have to search eBay or try the classified section on one of the larger sites

The second cork in the kit is for the ball collar.

Tubby is correct on the seal at the back of the ball socket assembly. It's an impregnated cork 'square ring'. Sorry for the delayed response. Was out of town for the weekend. My Grandson was at the National Taekwondo tournament in Austin, Tx. competing in the 12 to 14 year old Sparring. He is now the National Champion!! Way to go Kurt Lenz! (Proud Grandpa stuff)

Update, parts are ordered, found a yoke in Oregon and once it finds its way diagonally across the country to Florida, hope to be up and going.
