Gas smell in cab

I was reading the thread on moving gas tanks and saw a comment about when the tank is filled having the smell of gas in the cab. What causes this? Leaking fill tube? Leak in tank? I don't see any fuel in the cab. The sending unit was just replaced, could it not be sealed? I am new to all of this so any help would be appreciated.

Elvis, Since you just replaced the sending unit, I'd start there. You DID replace the rubber gasket, right?

Other areas are the filler tube and return vent. Check that all rubber is in good shape and not cracked.

howziit guys!

when i first bought THE PINK LADY, i noticed i always had the smell of gasoline in the cab. since the tank is in the cab, i figured one of the rubber connections was leaking. i replaced the sender and gasket; still had the smell. the tank's top hoses looked new, so i left it at that.

still had the gas smell; now i had a dripping leak on the garage floor!

after crawling undertruck, i spotted the corroded hose connection, where it was dripping gas onto the exhaust headpipe!

after re-locating the steel line and rubber hose connector(since been replaced with 3/8" line), i have no gas smell/leak.

JMO...find that leak, and carry a fire extinguisher!}>

Your problem is a simple one which can be fixed in minutes. If your sender unit has a fresh gasket, that's not it at all. Your problem is going to be the rubber filler hose that connects the metal filler pipe to the big gas cap doughnut thing on the outside of your cab. This has happened to me on three diff. chevs already. Just replace the rubber hose piece (or pieces) and make sure the clamps are tight and your good to go for another 30 years. These hoses dry out and shrink, and I have seen one that shrunk so much it partly came off the metal tank tube. Whatever you do, don't be flickin your Bic 'till you get those fumes capped!!!
