Does anyone have a suggestion of how I can mount a spare tire inside the bed of my 66 C10 short Fleetside. I plan to haul my Harley occasionally and don't want to obscure the center of the bed floor AND I certainly don't want to travel without a spare. I installed a rear tank....so under the bed is not an option. The tires I'm running are P235/75R15's. Thanks

In Bed Spare Tire

This was actually an option on many Municipal trucks back in the day so if you search diligently I bet there's a drawing of how to do it ~ maybe a Cal Trans site ? .

Basically they used one long bolt that went through one lug hole in the rime then a " U " shaped piece that had two studs to locate it firmly into the back side of the rim (the wheel was placed facing the bed side) and one of the up turned edges of the 'U' piece had a hole drilled into it , the lock was an "L" shaped piece with a nut welded dead center to screw onto the long bolt and the short end of the 'L' had a matching hole for your padlock to secure the whole shebang .

I wish I could draw as it's clear in my mind having worked on so many rigs so equipped .

Thanks Nate and John...I like the looks of the one Lakeroadster favored. I'll study the picture and make one like it.

some of the long bed fleetsides had a well thing on the driver side between the wheel well and the head board.

dunno if that would work on a short fleet tho'. I think it basically took up that board there on that side. It was indented with a drain hole in it, as I recall from photos I saw once.

I've seen some pics before, but it doesn't seem I've saved any as it didn't apply to my long step. :D

I wish I had thought of that before completing my bed. If I find one with a well for a spare, I'll get it and maybe use it in the future. Thanks, Jim

Always glad to help Woog!

A fella could make his own spare tire well by welding a couple trailer fenders together... or by simply modifying a fleet side bed tire cover (that's what the one in the photo above looks like) ... food for thought. ;)

I imagine it's be far easier to simply cut the trunk tire well out of some junker and weld it into your truck bed , no ? .

Well Nate I guess that depends on a fella's expertise, the tools he has at his disposal, his experience using those tools, his access to junker's that have tire wells, and the quality (or lack thereof) of said tire wells.

It's all good I figure.

Exactly My Point !

Clearly he has the skillset I lack and those spare tire wells are in every junkyard.....

I like this idea very much .

I finished my "in the bed" spare tire mount today. A couple days ago while wandering around the local vintage junkyard, I noticed a spare tire holder in the bed of a 85 Ford F150. I paid $10 for it and modified it to fit my 66 C10 Fleetside. I know it's not a pretty addition, but it will work for me. I used existing holes in my bed strips and a piece of polished aluminum diamond plate to protect my hardwood planks. Only two holes were drilled to affix the top lip to the inside of the bed rail. Here are a some photos.

As Before.......

Yet another job well done using the materials at hand .

Kudos , Sir .

Thanks for the compliments. I took the truck to my upholstery friend yesterday for the carpet, kick panels and speakers. He's a good friend and once did the interior of a 37 Ford Deluxe Coupe for me. It was a show car (of sorts). He looked at my spare tire set-up and said it was "BUTT UGLY". He's 6'4", 350 pounds...he got no arguments from me!
