inline 6 engine swamp

I have an 81 1/2 ton 4x4 (one of 3 chevy trucks). when replacing the inline 6 with a 305 I encountered a gap of about 1/2 inch. Both the engine and tranny are on the mounts, but they won't bolt together. Is there an adapter plate I could get, or would I have to trim the input shaft?

Is it an auto or standard tranny? If it is a standard, did you check the pilot bushing and make sure the shaft was lining up in it?

this is a manual tranny, yes the pilot bearing is lining up, I have matched the engine to the tranny w/o the flywheel and bellhousing for a messure and there's still a 1/2 inch differance. know anyone looking for an 81 1/2ton 2x4 that needs an engine? lol

Hi, you might have to move the motor mounts on the frame back, I did the same swap but I did not have any problems. But I swapped in a 1973 engine and mounts not a 1981 engine.

ok, thanks guys for trying to help, but so far here's where it stands....
From what I've heard in 1980 they changed the back of the inline 6 engine block by 1/2 inch. I've tried to match the engine and tranny outside of the truck, where motor mounts ect would not be a factor and there's still a gap of 1/2 inch. I'm not sure if they also changed the V8 engines in 1980 as well, can't imagine so, I've swaped newer v8's into older before. This is just my first time dealing with an inline 6. looks like the easiest way is to get a tranny for a v8 to do this swap.
