Lord , how I love self - service junkyards ! :)

It was raining in So. Cal. so I headed on out and found several similar trucks like mine , I scored an original inside hood release , an AM/FM Stereo radio with plugs and back of cab speakers etc. all for $20 , + bunches more of those niggly little small parts & hardware that the DPO / DPM always ruin or leave off....

I even found another OEM locking fuel cap and that was a freebie . my key fits it even .

Making freinds of the salesman pays off over the years .

I even found a complete 292 engine , recently rebuilt , carby still on it , I didn't grab it as mine runs fine now .

it looks like there's no shortage of Muncie SM465 trannies for $150 out the gate , warrantee even so maybe I'll just grab a good used one instead of overhauling my current one...
 
Nice, those junkyards are great! There's huge one near by me that has trucks stacked 2 or 3 high:(, and I asked them what they wanted for a 80's 4x4 steering box and they said $125+ a $25 core charge. Well needless to say I haven't been back since. Does the 292 use the same carb as a '64 235? My friend has been looking for one without success.

Your buddy's '64 uses a Rochester BC , the later 292 uses an all aluminum Monojet .

They'll sort of interchange but why not just buy a rebuilt one if his is too far gone to be repaired ? .

The 292 I just found , has a complete Rochester 1BBL on it but it's a bit different than the one fitted to my '76 so I left it there . it had all the vacuum operated fast idle stuff , charge air temp. switches and so on...

I wish I'da had a camera as few know what's supposed to be there much less how the various wires & vacuum hoses go .

It's raining in L.A. and I love how this rig lights right off in the cold pre-dawn , has plenty of power & smooth as silk , even when cold .
 
He already replaced the original with a slightly different version from a car (don't remember what). They are both warped and the one that's on it is stripped where the fuel line goes in. If we could find one that bolts up im sure we could modify the linkages to work.
 
Carby Fun

Remembering that your buddy's '64 os a 230 or 250 , not a 235 , the host here or any NAPA etc. will have a nice rebuilt one for $125 or so , keep the old core until you're satisfied then send it in cor the core refund .

Me , I just buy those old junker $5 core carbys at the flea market and either rebuild or collect parts until I can build one good one out of the various warped , smashed and DPO ruined ones....

Carbys are *very* delicate , like an old timey wristwatch , you can fix them but once gorilla fisted , they're often ruined beyond repair :( .
 
Just REMEMBER :

DO NOT surrender the core until the job is finished and running to your satisfaction ! .

I'd take the time to personally gap the spark plugs to .035" ~ .040" then set the idle timing to 10° BTDC with NO vacuum connected .

There are numerous vacuum ports on that carby , only the one that has no vacuum @ idle , should be connected to the dizzy ~ you'll notice the improvement in off idle power as soon as this is done .

Most ' mechanics ' are far to lazy to ever check this basic stuff .
