new distributor and timing

I don't know where to start here.

I put in an HEI on my rebuilt 230 - 6 cyl.

I can't remember the trick here...
rotate the fan until the #1 cylinder is at the very bottom...or top....and point the #1 plug wire from the distributor to ?

I know. and I haven't even had a beer yet...
 
Bring #1 Cylinder to the top of the Cylinder ( Top Dead Center ) . The Marks on The Harmonic Balancer Should also Line up to The 0 Mark . Then The Roter In the Distributer should be pointing torwards the The #1 position on the dist cap Where #1 Plug wire goes on. At Least to the Best of My Memory, Hope that Helps & Good Luck. Bob
 
One quick way to set timing, remove coil wire, ensure #1 is on firing order, and set at what ever timing mark you want, drop distributor in, hookup # 1 plug wire and timing lite (battery powered) turn key on and rotate distributor until lite flashes. Stop and lock it down your timed....
 
If you have the #1 cylinder up "pull the plug use a pencil and feel the top of the piston dont drop the pencil roll the motor up till the pencil is at its farthest point out. the point the distr. at the #1 cylinder. remember you have an exhsaust stroke and an intake stroke. so you want the intake stroke otherwise you are a 180 degrees out. timing marks on the balncer will help to line up zero if you have it. i think im rambling hope this make sense i have had a few cold beers tonight.
 
I purchased a remote start trigger that attaches to the starter. After it is correctly attached, remove the #1 spark plug and use the trigger starter to advance the motor through the compression and exhaust strokes with your finger over the plug hole. When it burps air out of the plug hole you are at tdc. Run through the cycly a few times to ensure you are at tdc. The remote trigger starter really helps with the process, especially if you are working alone. You can purchase one for around $10.00 at your FLAPS.
 
i work on new foriegn cars as a daily job and i still use the classic way of finding #1 top dead center, i pull out the spark plug, stick my finger over the hole, have a buddy turn over the moter with the key untill my finger blows out, then i back the crank up to 0. then just follow what cowboy357 said.
