New Sender Unit install

Hey Fellas,
Just wanted to know if anyone could tell me about putting a new sender unit in my gas tank. I think it should be easy to put in but my question is do I somehow need to completely empty my gas tank or just make sure the level is low, so that when I disconnect it from the fuel line it doesn't leak gas all over the cab?

you should empty it but some poeple just run it really low
