New Shop

As mentioned in my "on the move" post, I recently moved back to my home town and started sharing space with my Dad in his shop. Back in the early 70's my dad built this shop for his "Leyland's Marine and Sports" business where he built and repaired boats. Pictured below is his old work horse... a C-20

Got him talking when I came home with a 65 a few years ago to restore!

After a number of years, the marine business started slowing down so dad started "Leyland's Pools & Spas" in the early 80's. Dad renovated the shop loosing two bays in lieu of commercial store and having one storage bay. Finding a deal on some truss' Dad figured an office and larger showroom was needed so up went the second storey.

About 10 years ago dad retired and wanted a garage to restore his 47 white, so I made a deal and we went splits to build the back half to the original building. 24' x 40' with 18' ceilings... This gave us storage for the vehicles I had accumulated and gave him a place to work on his old rig. (original 3 bay store was now rented out).

To keep heating costs down I framed and insulated a 24' x 16' bay with 9' ceiling for dad to work on his truck all winter, installed a sliding barn style door for access between the two shops and now had a loft up stairs to store parts. Not a great picture of the loft but a cool shot of my 78 camaro! If you look closely you can see dad's 47 white tractor in the background.

A few pics of building my old shop 16' x 35', 9' ceilings with storage loft upstairs in the rafters for parts. It was a great size, only wish I has 12' ceilings instead. I built it in 2008 and had just finished it when we decided to sell and move back to Palmerston

Now its time to start working on my new shop!!! I spent the first week or two sorting through 6 yrs of accumulated junk and moving stored vehicles to the garage at my new house. Clean out was just in time for the fall Barrie swap meet... unfortunately the word "swap" is in there so I came home with almost as much stuff as I left with... but it was new to me junk so I'm happy

I spent some time building 1/2 walls for the loft with a 4' access gate from left over materials I had laying around from previous house renovations, The walls provide safety and more storage space. The gate will eventually be accessed by a chainfall & I beam to lift larger items in/out of the loft. I also built a landing above my work bench for the future staircase to the loft, this doubled as nice working/lighting environment for my work bench. Tunes were next on the menu so the stereo and speakers were mounted and a few shelves were built to display some of my old auto collectibles!

A few spare engines and my air compressor were moved up top last weekend to clear up some floor space below, we also robbed a few circuits of temporary power from the front shop panel until the new service is installed next spring.

I wanted to go the Barrie flee swap but I had to stay in town .
maby next spring i will make it.
your shop looks nice and big . what kind of four wheeler is that?

Steel cladding and insulation was delivered today, hopefully I can get started on the ceiling this weekend.

Thanks Johan. We have been vendors in Barrie for almost 10 years now, its always a great time. Spring is guys only weekend, fall is family weekend. My quad is a Suzuki, lots of fun when I find time to ride it!

I own a kawasaki kvf 400 me kids have a 90 and 250 cat .
almost every weekend we go for a small ride out back .

am still waiting for some parts for me truck ,orderd a new flexplate,if thats come in than i can put the engine and tranny to getter and put in the truck .
I am also orderd a new alumium water pump and mounting kit for the alternator .and a alumium cross flow radiator .
when all that comes in am will be bussy .

Dads

I'm glad to hear your that tight with your Dad. I can visit with mine for about 15 min before I start pulling my hair out. (Wait a minute, I don't have hair anymore). At 85 you would have thought my Dad would have mellowed out. Wrong! There is no way we could work in the same shop.

A little bit behind schedule but I finally got my ceiling done last weekend. Only temporary lighting for now until I get some T5HO flourescent's installed but seems to be enough light for most work. On Halloween I sprayed 15" of cellulose insulation in the attic, 80 bags, took almost 4hrs

To do List:

Build stairs to mezzanine and support landing from truss (hopefully this weekend)
insulate walls & vapour barrier
install steel on walls
permanent electrical
Back to working on my 65

Thanks Johan. Looks like shop progress might be a little slower over the next month or two until my wife recovers and two becomes the norm. Hopefully I can find a little time to get some of the small things done.
