Hello all! I recently acquired this 1950 3100! I’m still unraveling a lot of information about it! The first item is to determine the years of the engine! The numbers on the block 0179679 J56Z. If I’m deciphering this correctly, the J56Z would October 1956, but I can’t find what the Z represents. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Lucky you, not a babbitt splash oiler that came in your '50.


This from 1941 - 1957 Chevrolet Engine Identification

This documentation does not list J as a plant designation.

The Z would indicate a "regular" (not hydraulic lifter) 235. This one was from a car. A truck engine would
have X, XG, W, WA, V,U or UD as a type designation.

You're in luck, that full pressure oiling 235 is the perfect engine ~ sturdy and economical and easy and cheap to repair too .

You'll need to do a HOT VALVE ADJUSTMENT as soon as possible, expect to find multiple valves with zero or close to it clearance, this is very important .

The 235 engine, no matter what version or year, is not well suited to hydraulic valves .
