Oil Filter hook-up

Hello All,

I have purchased a refurbished oil canaster with bee-hive filter. My question is, where do the lines go? Am I blind?

Of course, I can't find any reference to this in the books, but from some pictures I have seen, it looks like the canaster mounts to the manifold. It's obvious that there is input and output lines for this thing, but where do they attach to at the block? I just replaced the oil pump, so I had an up close view and still couldn't make any sense out of it...

I've got the original 6-cyl engine.

Road King,Your filter cannister does clamp to the intake manifold.Over the years I have seen them installed on the front part & on the rear , but I believe the front is correct.As for the plumbing...You will find 2 threaded holes in the side of your engine block down near the oil pan.One is where the oil pressure guage is usually connected & you might need a 1/8 pipe tee to connect your filter & reconnect the guage.The other hole may have a plug already in it, if so remove it a connect the ruturn hose there.The upper hole in the filter is the inlet & I have seen some filter cans with "INLET" stamped into the metal.The lower hole is the return.Nice job on your truck.

Thanks for the info! I agree with you on the correct placement being on the front of the manifold - most of the pix I have seen are located here, with a few being in the rear.

You can't see it in my picture, but I do see the "plug", it is behind the speedo cable and throttle line that are dangling by the firewall.

Hello, I have a 57 chevy pu w/ 235 6 cly and I would like to no what color the oilfilter can should be? I plan to buy and put an filter can on my truck. It dose not have one . And when I pulled the oilpan there was a lot of gray sticky powder in the bottom of the pan. The motor will be overhauled soon. Also was the filter can for truck a accessorie or a add on or after market item ? The 1957 Chevrolet accessories book dose not show it.The gas filter was a accessorie.Was it a factory installed item ? Would like to no more. Thanks Brandon

B,here is what I beleive to be true ,but others may correct me if Im wrong...Filter cans were a dealer installed item in the days when 235 engines were made.It seems there were 2 common sources of supply. The Fram co suppied some & they were orange with a black lid.AC Delco supplied them also & I beleive they were blue & I dont remember what color the lids were.There may have been other suppliers also ,but these were the two most common ,at least here in the Southeast.There have been companys over the years that supplied chrome plated or aluminum ones also.Keep in mind that the ones for a 261 are different. Also the decals can still be found to restore the cans.Have a good day. Tom c
