Another newby question.. What oil should i be running in my 54 235? not having smoke issues but ive been using 30w non detergent. Good or bad? i have a slight knock now hoping itll clear when i do my valves hopefully this week.. is my oil too viscous??

Flame war !!!!!

Let me say in advance : you're ALL wrong ! .(even those who agree with me .

Back on topic , use the thinnest DETERGENT multi-vis oils you can find , synthetics are best .

Does it knock under load or when you let up on the throttle ? .

Might it be piston slap ? .

Before the "oil wars" start, just let me say: As long as you keep oil in it and change it religiously, it doesn't matter what brand it is. Ready, set, go...:D

My Opinion...

I prefer 10W-30 in either dino or synthetic blend. I definitely say detergent oil, if you have an oil filter. If you don't run an oil filter, I would stay with non-detergent oil until you find an oil filter to use.

As always, no matter what oil type or filter or no, frequent HOT oil changes are a must!!!

thanks for responding. It actually only will knock a bit under load. i can increase rpm but only gradually..

You guys are gonna love this...

I use 20/50 oil and I have a 10 Qt. oil pan and 2 oil filters....Big Tim  tims pics 025.jpg

I got several gallons of Rotella Diesel engine oil for bout 75% off a few years ago. I like it because it has increase wear protectors, zinc I guess. But once its out I will try to find the cheaper synthetic I can get.

But I have been running that for the last 3 years with no problems. I would say 8-10K miles, changed 4 times.

But then again I have the GMC, with oil pressure;)

Ok now I really have started it!!! Go
