one ton diff need better gaering

i have a model 1430 canadian 1952 chev. it is either a one ton or a three quarter ton??? i want to maintain originality. is there gears available to install in this diff that would make the ratio something more civilized like a 3.42?
 
I think the center section will interchange with a 3/4T up through 1972. By 72 there were a number of big blocks with automatics behind them being used and a 3.73 gear was common. This would be a huge difference and let you cruise at 60-70 with no strain. Years ago I mounted a Borgwarner overdrive unit in a custom made case in place of the hanger bearing where the closed driveshaft changes to an open one at the rear. After sorting out a few bugs like alignment and venting it worked good but was for cruising only, not hauling heavy loads. The OD with a 4.56 rear gave a 3.19 final but it had plenty of engine to handle it. Some might suggest the T5 trans but it can't handle any load hauling.
 
You can/should be able to exchange to a 410/1 without having new axles made. I had a 342/1 built for my 48 which had the 514/1 in it. Call some rear-end shops to get an idea of what you can do. You might call "Hooper's Rear End Exchange Inc. 12201 Branford Street Sun Valley, CA 91352
(818) 899-2515" , and ask about what you can do.
 
Before believing too much of what Evan and cchar said above, decide if this is a 3/4 or 1 ton. I don't think they use the same center section. The easy swap to later center sections is based on the 3/4 ton rear end.
 
Final Drive Upgrades

Count the # of studs holding the pumpkin to the bajo housing then count the # of splines on the axle end , then you'll know what will fit from the junkyard .

GM G-Vans with V-8 engines and Automatic Trannies '67 ~ '7? are the easiest to find , old junked Ice Cream trucks and like that .
