Parking brake lever woes

The detent isn't catching the spur gear on my parking brake. I can rotate it into place with my finger and release it with the trigger button. Does anyone know if there is a spring in there or does it rely on gravity to latch?

maybe try disconnecting the parking brake cable and soak the gear assembly with wd40.I'm pretty sure that there is a spring-might just be stuck instead of broken.In any event this assembly is easy to find used(one on e-bay now)
