Regulator and Resistor Removal

Hello Everyone,

This question is for our spark-heads out there! If my motor is now running a alternator, can the regulator and resistor that’s mounted on the firewall (original equipment) be removed/eliminated


I plan on installing a new wire harness 12 circuit (see web page)

My new motor (1972 350) will have an HEI distrubitor also.

Yes, you should remove ALL (well almost all) wiring if you are putting in a new harness. The regulator & resistor should be removed.

I am assuming your new alternator has an internal regulator, most do. Make sure your new harness is compatible with your alternator (1 wire or 3 wire). 3 wire is better if you have a choice.

Keep the wire for the dome light because it is hard to run a new one. I'm assuming your harness does not include the actual sockets for lamps (head, tail, turn, dash). If so, you need to keep enough of the old wire to make splices to your new wire.

I'd recommend soldering and heat shrinking the splices for trouble free later operation. Learn how to do this operation on a bench, not hanging upside down under the dash. And don't be too pi$$ed off when you forget to slip the shrink tubing onto the wire BEFORE you solder the connection.
