remove aftermarket sunroof?

Hey guys, the previous owner of my 64 C10 put an aftermarket pop-up sunroof in it, and it leaks. I don't really care for the looks of the sunroof, but I could live with it if it didn't leak (it's nice to have during these AL summers). Do you think it would be better to remove it and have the roof patched, or just buy a new sunroof and put it in.
 
get rid of it!!!!! they look cheeesy and not true to the image of the truck. besdie the next one will leak in time as well not to mention rust collection area!! Kilroy steps off soapbox!!!!!
 
Agreed! It doesn't look right at all I'll find a local body man see if he can patch it for me. My welding skills are amateur at best:rolleyes:.
 
I would have to agree with everyone else. Trucks with sun roofs are a no go. The problem with patching it closed is getting all the right curves into the roof. It may not look like it but the roof is curved back to front and side to side. The other problem is welding such a large piece without streaching the metal. Welding the roof can cause the metal to warp and cause it to be wavey. Even grinding down the weld can cause this problem. So part of me says ditch it and another says order new seals and live with it. Either way sun roofs suck.
 
Yeah, it sucks, especially when it rains, and I want it gone if I can have it done without causing more trouble.

I think I have seen total roof patches online, do you think a person good with a welder (not me) could just replace the whole roof without any issues?:confused:

I can't open a can of dog food without some issues !!! Yes, the roof skin can be replaced by someone who is competent. ( don't let them try and convince you into removing the drip rails, you will trade the roof leak for a face misting ! ) but there will be some issues, there always are !!! ;)

Sunroof is Gone!

:D The sunroof is gone!:D I figured what do I have to lose by trying to do it myself, so my brother and I took the sunroof out today and patched it with a piece of sheetmetal. It seems to have turned out pretty good, but the true test will be in longevity. I'll post some pics later.
 
I probably could have, but I saw someone on another forum patch his with a sheet of sheetmetal. The piece of sheetmetal was only about 30 bucks with lots leftover, so I figured what the heck I'll try that first and if I botch it I'll cut the entire roof off another truck and weld it on. I figured I didn't have much to lose by trying.
 
I had a 71' that was patched with a piece of sheet metal and a ton of bondo. The truck had a fresh paint job so it didn't really notice the bondo problem. After driving it around the bondo cracked and it dripped on me every time it rained.
 
Eww that sucks...

I didn't use any Bondo except for a little to blend the welds and I tried to support the patch from the inside to help keep it from falling in, but I guess I won't really know how well it's going to hold up until it's been on there for a few months.
 
Here are some pics of it while we were welding it in, but I haven't taken any pics of it after we finished it.

It's not perfect, but I'm not a master welder either:p

whats wrong with using sheet metal? you guys do realize that cars are made of sheet metal right? the factory just presses them into shape. As long as he used the same gauge as the trucks metal hes fine. but i must say, ill bet thats one flat roof. youd need a english wheel and some experience to get that done right.
 
LOL yeah its kinda flat :rolleyes:, but you don't notice it too much unless you stand in the bed and look down on it. I'll prob replace the roof skin before I have it painted, but its not leaking anymore; so its fine as is for now.
 
I have an inner panel that might work if your interested so that you can get the inside to look close to what it once was

Let me know it wouldnt be much plus shipping and if I needed to cut down more for ya I can
