    Spring Installer

I hear you guys talking about using needle nose pliers to install springs ~ this typically nicks the spring right in the hook area and that's why they break and fall off in a year or so :(

So , go to your local Harbor Freight or Mo'cycle shop and ask for a " spring installation tool " it's a ' T ' handle with a tiny hook in it's tip ~ hardened and extremely usefull , you'll wonder how you ever got along without it once you've tried it .

    Retail co$t is undfer $10.00 , the last two I bought were list priced @ $6.95 .

    Figures-

I KNEW there had to be a better way! (I try to stay out of parts stores- it's bad for what little $s I have left after the bill paying frenzy.) This is a tool that I just GOTTA' get! Not only does it sound like s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the spring would take less effort, but it would also take the surprise out of things when the pliers decide to slip!
Guess what? More FRIGGIN' SNOW!!!!

    Name for tool

Sorry for the crewdness (spelling) but I've had one of these for years and I've always known it as a "bugger hook". I know that sounds kinda wierd but that's what it's always been called around here. Mine has a 1/2 inch round T-handle, approx 6" long (very hard shaft) about 1/8 inch in diameter with a hook on the end. It works wonders on a lot of things,,, springs also. Get one, you will find 100 uses for it.

Just go into the store and tell em ya want a "bugger hook" they'll know exactly what your talking about:eek:

Zig you got me rollin in the floor again. The surprise when the pliers let go gave me a hilarious mental picture. You know that surprise really sucks when the pliers let go and usually scratches something important and impossible to hide. It's sometimes hard to explain to customers how when they dropped off their car it was fine but now it has a huge gash in the side of the vehicle because your pliers decided to give up the ghost.:D

    bugger pickers are cool!

Taste has precluded me from saying this before, but now that you've brought it up, bugger pickers are an essential part of anybody's toolchest. Never use pliers to attach a spring! i think Nate said it best when he said they notch the metal, and when you do that, it's just a matter of time before you have failure! Anything smooth works for attaching springs, be it brake parts, seat adjusters, you name it. We've fabbed several over the years, and the key is: smooth, not grooved!

    TB'sD
Sent the springs today. Forgot to stick a note in it for ya, But I hope they work well. They looked in pretty good shape!

As far as the cost......I'll Trade ya........I collect Harley Davidson T-Shirts from around different parts, if you have a dealer near you, pick up a T-shirt and send it up. I take a black XXL (Ahem, I like them loose!! ) They always look good when I'm on the bike....looks like I've been somewhere.

Good luck w/the springs, if I can help w/anything else, let me know!

The best Harley T-shirt I ever saw...

It was black (of course) with the traditional logo on the front. On the back it said: If you can read this, the b*tch fell off. I bust a gut everytime i see one!
