Shift pins?

Here's one for you Nate I think, Ive just spent the afternoon wrestling with my 4 speed muncie (damn they are heavy!) re-building it with one of those great Novak kits, just one slight problem, where the shifter fits into the lid there are two pins that the shifter retainer cover hook onto, they also act as pivots for the shifter, well mine are shot! Anyone got any great tips for replacing these?? I can't find anyone who supplies them.

p.s started on the diff rebuild this evening too, got one of those 3.55 kits, swinging a 6ft long torque tube around is fun. What a work-out I've had today!

O.K. , it's been a while since I did one of these , last one was the three speed floor shift tranny in my old '46 , that one the pivot pin was worn down to little points on each side , I looked in the parts book and discovered it was actually a _pin_ pressed onto the shift lever so heating it revealed the center of the pin , pressed it out (that was a job , lemme tell you !) and had my machinist make me up a new hardened pin , shifted great after that .

Actually , it shifted fine before too , it was just -so- loose & wobbly , when the input shaft sheared off (I dunno it just did , I wasn't driving it that day) I dug into it and replace everything I found worn out .

I know these Muncie SM420 trannies were used untill 1969 as I pulled a cherry
one out of a junked Munincipal truck in Arizona last November , it had a nice lever but I don't know if the bends are the same as AD ones are ~ we get that a lot at our shop : big rigs and GM says ' NLA ! ' on the shift levers but Allison sells them to me just fine , some touch the seat in certain gears as the bends don't quite match.... some we heat and re-bend , some we don't need to .

There should be a good used one for you lying in some junkyard over here....

I thought there was lots of ex U.S. Army truck parts in Europe , no ? . that's a _super_ common shift lever , don't waste and time trying to re-weld the pins , if you cannot press the old pin out , have it cut out with the plazma cutter used to remove broken off bolts...

Or drill it out in the drill press .

If there are a lot of spare parts over here people are keeping it very quiet, its so hard to locate anything that isnt small block , thats all anyone ever wants so six banger stuff just sems to vanish!

There are two pins fitted in the lid of the box, not one pin through the shifter, they are small, hardened, approx 1/4 inch and peened over to fix into lid so taking used ones out would be difficult, not that making new ones is an easy task, all I can think of is to machine the ends of the thread of larger, high tensile bolts, to the right diameter, then tap the box so thar the bolts screw in with the machined part sitting inside the shifter housing, touch of thread lock to secure. Well I will have to give it a go seeing as you have let me down Nate

Well at least I can find some solitude in the fact that I have found a subject that Nate isn't fully versed on

Hm , trying to get a mental picture going here , I'd think making up a set of pins like you described would be the simplest fix then .

I'm thinking the two pins that the gear lever retainer turns and locks onto...

Obviously not them .

Hard to believe a good used tranny lid cannot be found . have you tried the military vehicle guys .

There's much I don't know BTW but having the broken part in one's hand usually the correct repair procedure usually suggests itself .

Ok, fixed it! ground out old worn out pins and tapped hole to accept high tensile allen bolts with cylindrical heads the same size as old pins, the shifter now locates on the head of the bolts which are inside the shifter hole, works great.

P.s just spent a day (yup a whole day) setting up the diff, assembling and adjusting then checking wear patterns only to strip it, try smaller shims, assemble, adjust, wear pattern, strip, new shims, assemble, adjust etc etc etc, then HOORAAAAAH! its done BUT, BUT, BUT!!!!!!! no diff gaskets in kit!!! AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHHH!!! if it didn't weigh half a ton I would have thrown the diff through the garage door!!!!

Decided to fit the new brake shoes, and two of the clips on the pins on my huck brakes broke!!

Cleaned up and hit the beers, not my day, gotta order these small parts from US as no one stocks these over here in England

Those stupic Huck brake shoe washers , they suck . can't you use some modern E-clips ? .

Well I have just ordered a gross of those original style clips because I was concerned about using modern clips, at least with those old style its impossible for them to come off if they are good clips,
