2 horns or 1 horn Bill, I'm like Martinius. I'm not electrical inclined & trying to understand and learn. 1950 Passenger car with 2 horns is listed using the word "current". Current: High note - 17-19 amperes Low note - 19-21 amperes And the same catalog for the 1950 truck, with 1 horn, is listed as "current drain": Current drain - 10 amperes http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/5097.htm Is there a difference between current and current drain as listed in the catalog. Also, using Martinus' horn with a resistance of 0.3 ohms, will that be the same using the two passenger horns. Or do all the numbers change? What would the numbers be using the single 10 amperes horn.
Keystoner: Current and current drain as used above both refer to the same thing. The amount of current (amps) used by the horn(s) when attached to a 6 volt system. In the case of the car (two horns, high and low tone) the current would be approximately 38 amps. The resistance of the high horn is about 0.33 ohms and the low tone horn is about 0.3 ohms. Wired together in parallel like they would be in the car they would measure around 0.16 ohms. The truck horn (a single horn drawing 10 amps) would have a resistance of 0.6 ohms.
There seems to be a suspiciously similar topic going on the GMC site right now Bill sure is asking a lot of questions for someone that appears to know all the answers already Quote from Bill Hanlon " Blue Chip Aficionado" Picture of Bill Hanlon posted My 6 volt horn (running on 12 volts) is sounding pretty weak lately, so I thought I'd open it up, clean the points and adjust the gap for max noise. When I took the cover off I found that the wax & paper capacitor had leached a bunch of brown, burned looking goo. The paper outside covering of the cap was burned, making it impossible to read what the original value of the cap was. Master Parts Book does not break down the horn to separate components. Any of you have knowledge of capacitor values in horns? Posts: 1530 | Location: Klein, TX | Registered: Mon August 06 2007
Yes, I asked the question about the value of the capacitor both on this forum and on the Old GMC truck forum. I asked because I don't know. And I haven't received an answer backed with knowledge yet. Sorry if I'm taking up too much bandwidth on the WWW.
