Greetings all! My 56 Stepside has the spare tire well on the fender. Behind the tire mount plate is a rod that is bolted to the top rail of the bed in between the two support rods welded to the tire mount plate. The rod in the middle is about 8" long and is threaded on the end. The rod points forward and runs along the same line as the bed rail. Does anyone know what this rod is for???

Thanks!

Hey Sub,

Unfortunately I'm high on the list of the computer-technically-challenged so have no way to send a picture. The rod I'm talking about is pretty obvious... there are three support rods welded to the tire mount plate. The rod I'm talking about is bolted to the bed rail and is only about 8" long with about an inch of threads on the end. Any Techs from CD have an idea? Sub, if you can send a pic maybe we can back into this..

Thanks for your help!

Fender Mounted Spare

Anyone with a fender mounted spare in the well?? Does yours have this rod with the threads on the end that I've been trying to de-mystify?

RE: Fender Mounted Spare

Larry

checked my truck today. I have a spare tire well. There is a plate shape as a triangle which is attached by a v bracket welded to the plate and bolted to the top of the bed. then two other v brackets to make a total of 3 brackets. Sorry no threaded rod. didn't have time to snap a shot i will post it this week

RE: Fender Mounted Spare

Thanks for the info Jay! You've described exactly what I have (the plate and the v bracket). The threaded rod I have is bolted onto the top bed rail between two of the v bracket rods. I'm thinking that the original farmer who owned the truck must've added this for something.

I have only seen 1 or 2 but I know what you are talking about, I know where one of these are and I'll take a look and I will get back to you on this.

Alright Jesse! Thanks! I was thinking of taking it off but thought I'd first find out what it was.

Found the spare tire rack in the maintance manual under accessories no additional rod there must of been a owners ad on

RE: Fender Mounted Spare

Yeah, that's what I'd been thinking as well... but Jesse said he'd seen a couple so it'll be interesting to see what he turns up.

I took the rod off. Don't know what it's for and it's going to get in the way of the new oak bed rails coming. I'm thinking that everyone's right and that it was an ad on by an old farmer. Perhaps for a jack mount. The bolt that held the rod on was a regular one vs. the clutchheads holding the spare tire rack on. Thanks for all of the feedback!
