yes a good beer is allways nice, here in Belgium there is a lot ! Do you know the Belgian beer Val ? Duvel-Stella Artois-Jupiler-Grimbergen-Hoegaerden,......schol ! ( that means chears)
Duvel-Stella Is one of my personal favorites ! Love the bottle and the beer is vundabar ! I knew what schol means. I can even order Two Shots & a Beer in Polish ! It may be good to know that one day ! Val
Nice Val ! : The job is allmost done, but i need a couple off hands more to pull it off the motor. It's a little bit stuck and to heavy to do alone,my force in the arms is gone.Between the gearbox and the motor is allready a gap of 1 cm. It is not easy without taking out the motor, the 2 top bolts where nicely hidden, but all the bolts are loose now,the starter motor was the easy job. Normaly tommorow i get some help,i am waiting a phonecall from my friend. Update and photo's in a couple of days.
Be careful pulling that tranny. It's not the heaviest one in the world, but still be careful. Use a jack under it if possible. When putting it back IN also use much caution not to get it cocked and bend the clutch.
Hey guys,i'm back with some news and photo's (the photo's are not so good). It was not easy to pull the gearbox off,was a "little" stuck but with help from a friend it was done in a few minutes. We have seen 2 problems....the clutch disc is in the middle not straight anymore, just not cracked. The pressure plate is ok. And the bushing(is that the name)is in and out full of big scratches Now is it true....that the bushing must be in bronze and not from copper ? That a copper bushing is to week ? Could it be that i putted the clutch disc in wrong ? That this made the problem at the testdrive after all those miles of driving ? The bushing was new made for me....in copper. Everything inside is full of copper things, hope you can see what i mean with those bad photo's.... The order is allready done,it is a 11 inch i need
Johan, I don't think you can use a copper bushing for the crankshaft. There are some new needle bearing type bushings available but I have always trusted bronze. Get a new bronze bushing. Are you sure you did not bend or misalign the clutch during tranny removal? You can easily bend up the clutch during installation or removal if you let the transmission "hang" without the pilot inserted in the crankshaft bearing. I have done that but it did not cause the grinding and complete breakdown in shifting you described. When you figure the problem out and start ressembly BE SURE you stab the tranny in straight and do not let it hang while you rest your arms! Installing the clutch disc backwards would cause problems I'm sure... but I don't know if it would account for our symptoms. I look forward to seeing what others say about that.
In my earlier talk I mentioned this happening to me, with the bushing. If the old pressure plate is bent in the spline section....that would wipe out the bushing. The bushing should be bronze. But........check the end of the input shaft that slides into the bushing. If it is rough, or pitted from rust, I would use the needle bearing bushing instead. Also, the pressure plate can't be installed backwards because the spring plate won't fit into the flywheel.
It has been about 15 years since we took the 3 speed out of the 66, but if I remember correctly the imput shaft if held with one bearing in the front of the transmission case. The rear of the shaft has the imput gear mounted to it. If the bushing is distoryed as you discribed then the imput shaft is flopping around. This would allow the clutch plate to flop around, and cause all kinds of pressure to be place on the front bearing and the input shaft gear inside the transmission. The input shaft is hardened and if it is not damaged a little emery cloth will clean this up. The bushing in the pressure plate, bronze, will most likely take care of the problem. I think I referred to it as the throw out bearing, but meant the bushing in the pressure plate. For the life of me I can't remember the correct name for that dang bushing. Hope everthing works out, sounds like you are on the right track, sorry I did not provide the correct terminology the first time.
Pilot bearing or pilot bushing are the common terms.................. Johan, what is the status over there? You're not still sipping that great beer are you?
Hello guys, nothing changed.....i did the order 13 days ago, still not sended and they don't reply my mails anymore. The first week it was a inventory, they replyd my mail, the second week nothing anymore.... When i check the website it's marked as not sended. Not the first time they( LMC ) do this,i am not a new customer, bought for approx. 1500 dollar off items before ! Don't understand...this will be the last time i order over there. Next time i order all my items at Classic Parts, they don't have everything but they are fast and friendly ! The set was only 50 dollar more...but i ordered at the cheapest 1,damned i hate this I ordered the clutch set and the bronze pilot bushing. When they send it it will be approx. another 2 weeks to arive. And yes....the beer sipping go's good now hahhahahahahha
Yea I have heard people having problems with LMC. I have ordered from them before with out any problems. Hope all goes well with it. Just drink another one for me!!!
Hello everybody,I have a 1964 chevy stepside.The truck has a stock 350 with the 3-speed trans.My problem is gas mileage.Its bad,10-11 mph.I have a new Eldelbrock 600cfm carb. headers.The truck runs great but no matter what I do it doesn't get any better.I don't rod the truck,so the 4 barrels don't open.Thank God,I couldn't afford it. Any ideas ?
There are two things that will yield better gas milage in this order. Transmission, and rear end ratio. Check your rear end ratio. If it's lower than 4:11 you can safely reduce it to 3:70 without changing transmissions. ( if you went to say a 3:08 or 3:30, the truck would bog down in the lower gears requiring more gas pedal. ) As an example: I had a 305 with a two barrel backed by a granny 4 speed with a 3:70 ratio rear. I dropped in a 350 HO crate motor with a 4 barrel backed by a 700 R4 automatic trans and left the rear at 3:70. It went from 9 mpg, on a really GOOD day, to 19-21 mpg average. With the price of gas now a days, the payback time on the conversion should be in about two years ! Val
I agree.......700-r4 is the answer. Buy a 90-96 Chevy Caprice that runs good, parts it out and keep the tranny..........you'll have your overdrive and may even make some money If you can find an ex police car you'd be doing really good. The later ones have FI LT1 350's and disc brake posi rearends in them. Find an auction maybe that has municipality vehicles up for sale.
Back to Johan, very sorry to hear of your troubles. If your weather is like ours, it is snowing today and time to think about putting the truck in the barn for the winter.........
Johann, Why buy that stuff from a truck supplier at all? Those parts (clutch set and pilot bushing) are common as dirt over here. Next time, think about some place like Summit or Jegs or Northern Parts to get your parts from. By the way, did you ever verify that the tranny is okay? I can't find that in the thread. If the tranny was hanging, you might well have bent the clutch up while removing it. Keep us informed...
Yeah i'm back; they sended the package today..... now another 10-14 days before it is at my doorstep. The tranny must be Ok,my friend looked at it and says it's ok.It takes all the gears and neutral,it's not stuck.Hopefully it's ok.... The weather over here is still ok,reany and not so cold for the moment but thats gonna change in a couple of weeks. For the moment is the "sun" up at 8 in the morning and the "sun" down at 5 at evening. My garage is verry big,i just bought a big hot air blower for the cold days that are to come, nothing stops me for working at the truck Now waiting for the parts, just like a little child for his toys
The parts arived today after 5 weeks........(they waited 2 weeks before sending-2 weeks to get in Belgium and 1 week at the customs office) The customs where friendly again this time ...i had to pay 81 euro ( 119 dollar)extra To get all the parts here i've lost just over 1460 dollar on customs. ..i love my Chevy ! On monday the work starts, hopefully everything go's well.
