The trick is to get a narrow tread with tall sidewalls .
15"wheels were not an option in '49 (?) I don't think .
So , look for a 215 or so , maybe 235 tread width and then try to find a tall aspect ratio (the /XX number) , you're looking for a /80 or higher number here , /95 would be perfect but I don't think anyone actually makes one that tall .
Be sure to get LT tires , not passenger car tires ! your life depends on them .
Radials of course , not crappy bias - ply rubber .

15" wheels were RPO's available from '47 thru 55.1. The tire size was 6.70x15. As Nate and Larry have stated, the modern equivalent is the 215 with aspect ratio of 78 or better.
