torque tube seal

Hey guys, anyone had any problems with the seal on the front of the torque tube bushing, got an axle installation kit and the seal doesn't fit the new bushing, way too big! the seal that is,

Not sure what you meant ~ axle kit isn't for the Torque Tube seal bell... :confused:

The best bell seals are the original leather ones , keep clean and soaking in oil whilst having fun with the u-joint or what not .

You know to shim the bell to light drag , right ? smooth out those ridges with 1,000 + grit wet/dry paper and then clean up really well before test fitting sans U-joint , the bell tube should stay in position but move with 3# hand pressure...
 
Sorry Nate, lost in translation I think, I know we invented the language but I still haven't got a handle on it, I meant the brass bushing that fits in the end of the tube, about 5 inches long, theres an oil seal, like a wheel bearing type, that presses into the rear of it so its at the pinion end of bush rather than g/box end. The bushing hadn't been machined for the seal at all, just a mistake on manufacturers part, friday afternoon or monday morning part we call them, meaning it was the last one made on friday and was rushed or first one made on monday morning and we all know how that day feels!

Oakie Bushing

Oh , I see ~ you didn't mention it is the bushing & seal in the _front_ end of the driveshaft , that's called an " Oakie Bushing " and some were made without a seal , glad you got it sorted out as that fixes a _lot_ of vibration problems and stops oil from draining out the tranny and overfilling the rear end .

Is it in yet ? if not , you'll need to freeze it so it'll drift right into place with a block of hardwood (from old pallets is cheapest) . some of the newer Oakie Bushings are poorly made , one fellow had to chuck his into a lathe and trim off like .020" to make it fit .
 
Okie Bushing

Nate; Can you recommend a seller for a quality Okie bushing? I've seen them at Ecklers, Chevs Of 40's, Filling Station, etc., and VAP sells the bearing puller for $40. Thanks for you advice. - Mark.

I can't ~

The last one I did , came from The Truck Shop in Anahiem , Ca. (on Batavia)

It was O.K. I guess ~ I froze it overnight and it still never went all the way in , I was sweating bullets but everything was jake , the seal stopped the transfer of tranny gear oil into the rear end and no vibrations etc....

I know I have an original one from Oklahoma machine Works (guess why it's called an " Oakie Bushing") but I have not seen it in 10 years , God alone knows where I stashed it .
